Default Foundation piecing

Hi guys

I am a complete newbie at quiltmaking though I can't wait to get profficient
as I have seen so many patterns that I can't wait to start. I have the next
two years worth of quiltmaking already planned out!

I attended a beginners workshop at my local quilting shop yesterday for the
first time and absolutely loved it. The project for newbies is to make a
relatively small square quilt with four panels made up of 9 square patches
with different designs. I have already made all four panels, basic square
patchwork, monkey wrench, log cabin and a friendship star (I think it was
called that). All I need to do now is the sashing and put the quilt
together.

I have read about foundation piecing where paper is used but I can't find
information anywhere on what reasons paper is used, when foundation piecing
should be used and when not to use it.

Can anyone fill in the gaps for me?

TIA

Fran

First, Fran, welcome to quilting and RCTQ. It sounds like your workshop was
great -- you got a lot done in a short time.

I don't do a lot of foundation piecing, but I like to use it when I'm making
a block that has components that don't use "standard" template shapes.
Foundation piecing is great for ensuring accuracy and works well for smaller
quilt blocks (although you can use it on larger ones, as well). Here are a
couple of sites that give you more information:

http://www.quilt.com/HowTo/FoundationHowToPage.html

http://quilting.about.com/library/weekly/aa070797.htm

Here's a link to one of Carol Doak's blocks, and you can see what I mean by
nonstandard template shapes (and Carol pops in to the group here every so
often to answer questions and let us know what she's doing):

http://www.quilt.com/Artists/CarolDo...sY2KQuilt.html

And last, but not least, Anita Grossman Solomon has developed a new method
of foundation paper piecing that she recently demonstrated on Simply Quilts.
I just bought her book but haven't had a chance to try it yet (and it
includes a quilt made by one of the RCTQ's members, Marcella Peek):

Hope these help a little!

Nope, it's not just you! I tried it again and couldn't get it to open, even
though I visited it earlier today. It looks like maybe the entire site is
temporarily down. Maybe we overloaded it!
