Default Martial Arts

Hi

My daughter has taken up martial arts and is into cross stitch. She wants
to do a pattern with that theme but I can not find anything. Does anyone
know of anything on the web that I can order for her?

Cindy,
Kulik Creations has a martial arts design
http://www.mindspring.com/~kk1/l13.htm.
It's available through Hoffmans (#97-1344) and any needlework store should
be able to order it for you

Have you (she) thought of either making her own chart from a photo or
having one of the 'photo to chart' places make one for her? I will be
testing for my black belt in karate in September so I know where she's
coming from. I have been making my own charts for some time now because
that's the only way I get the finished picture to look exactly the way I
want it. What style is she in?

Hi there...

I've been following this thread and wondered what style of
karate you do Maureen?

My 19 yr. old son has been training in Shotokan karate for 8
1/2 yrs. He got his Black Belt a little over 2 yrs. ago, and is
travelling as a member of the Candian Team to Zurich, Switzerland in
October to compete in the World Shotokan Karate Association
Championships. He will be competing in both Junior Men's Kata and
Men's Kata. We are all so excited for him!

He competed in the National Karate Championships two years ago
in both Junior Men's and Men's Kumite, and has also competed in the
B.C. Winter Games twice both in kata and kumite.

Karate sure has been good for him!

take care, Linda

P.S. There don't seem to be many martial arts type patterns out
there, but I did find some reverse applique patterns for Japanese
symbols created by Designs to Share with You at Satin Moon in
Victoria.

Hi Linda,

I am practicing with Shorei-Kan Canada http://www.shorei-kancanada.ca/
I started late (32 years old) but I'm still plugging along. I'm now 46
years old. But my DH (58 years), two DD, SS and nephew are all in it
too. We all love it. Shorei-Kan is a classical art more than a sport
type of karate, so although we do have inter-dojo tournaments, we don't
compete against other styles nor award trophies. But I'd recommend it
for everyone if for no other reason than the secure feeling it gives
women on the street when faced with a situation that could become
unpleasant shall we say?

Hi Linda,

You have a great web page. Our styles are very similar I think. We
only have one dojo on Vancouver Island and it's in Victoria. They're
all great for self confidence though. I took what I learned and taught
a women's self defense class for a year. That was very rewarding. I
hope your son stays with it. It's a great asset for todays way of life!

Hi Maureen,

I am not familiar with the style of karate you practise, but
found the web page very interesting. I'm unaware of any dojos
practising this type of karate on Vancouver Island.

I think knowing any style of karate gives a person a feeling
of confidence and security on the street. It was quite interesting
when our son took a knife attack seminar in Victoria from a member of
the local police force. The instructor commented on how the students
would automatically use their karate in combination with what he was
teaching...very neat to watch.

Good luck with your Black Belt grading, I admire you for
sticking with it and getting to the level you are

take care, Linda

Thanks Maureen I'm pretty sure Mark will stay with karate
all his life. He's been teaching for 5 yrs., has had his Black Belt
for just over 2 yrs. and will be grading for his 2nd degree Black Belt
sometime soon. It's a way of life for him and has been since his
first steps into a dojo

He also taught introductory classes for kids through our local
Parks & Rec Department...the kids loved him! This summer so far he's
been to a summer camp in Revelstoke, this weekend he's going to one in
Abbotsford, two weeks after that our club is having a camp in
Parksville. He trains two nights a week during the summer (that's all
our club trains) and the first of September it will be back to three
nights a week. He is attending two training sessions for the World
Shotokan Karate Championships in Revelstoke in September, then
competes for a position on the BC Karate Team on Oct. 4th, and leaves
for Zurich on Oct. 5th. On top of all this he works part-time at an
indoor climbing center, and just finished his first year at college.

Where do they find the energy???

take care, Linda
