Maybe you had better put a cage round yourself and tell them they will
have to ask for permission to come in. LOL

beware of what you do with your legs in the recliner chair.

One night when I did my first tassel I settled down with a tray of beads
on my lap. DH was in his recliner alongside of me watching TV.
I was working on the long beaded tassel skirt and had got a few yards of
thread in the needle, and thousands of beads in the tray. I had only
enough focal beads because I was new to beading, but there were many
seed beads.

We settled down for the evening, me beading, working on a long strand of
beads I pushed the tray lower down my legs. Then I decided to cross my
ankles. Realising what I done I made a grab for the tray only to catch
the end of it. It flipped up and scattered all those beads all over DH.

The look on his face was unbelievable as he was pelted with thousands of
beads. Knowing my design was scuppered if I lost any of the focal beads.
I yelled do not move to him. Then like a gorilla grooming its mate I
started to pick the beads of him. They had gone into his shirt pocket
and down his open shirt neck. I picked up the largest main beads and
then I got the dust buster and gave him a vacuuming all over. I then
let him out of the chair and I vacuumed the chair.
I found all the focal beads but many seed beads went astray. Through all
this I was in hysterics with laughing and was laughing for many days
after.
DH's face was a picture of surprise to behold.
I am giggling about it now just remembering it.

What ever you do, do not cross your ankles with a tray of beads on your
legs.

the only thing that works for me is my covered cookie sheet.

however, there are trays [usually round but not always] that are used
for paints. the depressions are shallower, and i know a lot of people
who like them for beads.

http://www.whimbeads.com/dish.html
and just about anyplace that has a crafts section has them, too.

oh wow! Another marvelous suggestion! Husband has a couple of those
hanging around unused atm, too, so I might switch to those this evening

to
see how this goes. I suspect my preferred position [curled up in the
reclining chair] will impact on what works well..... [pictures little

tiny
teensy weensy beads rolling all over living room terrazzo floor and

people
complaining for days about stepping on 'little pebbles"].

You guys are so helpful and I really appreciate it!

Might be a good idea.......
/ponders cat who likes laps at the worst possible moment
/ponders dog who deposits tennis balls in my lap whenever I sit down
/ponders 8yo son who just has to snuggle with me whenever I sit down
/ponders husband who just has to talk to me from the furthest possible point
in the house and won't get up to find me where I am rather than bellowing
just quietly enough that it is hard to hear every word, just after I finally
get to sit down

Then again, maybe I should just stop sitting down?

Thank you, Margie. I spent three hours last evening starting to learn
beadpoint and developing an increasingly deep respect of all those who work
with beads in various fashions. Amazing what *doing* teaches the observer
about the doers! Anyway, I did find it nearly as enjoyable as my absolute
favorite, counted xstitch. The size of the beads did not put me off, but
I'll tell ya that threading that beading needle had me more than cross eyed
and frustrated several times! That is one trick I need to learn some new
skills on! I started with beads of colors I was actively using in a plastic
ice cube tray. It works to contain them, but is a bit deep and shadows the
holes. So, more experimentation required there. But, fun was had and I
think now that I'm starting to do the craft I can start using my imagination
more to apply it without relying on books and patterns heavily. Thank you
for the encouragement!

Sounds like we have another beader amongst us! YaY! It is fun, isn't
it? I'm still learning stitches and I think it will be less a strain
once I go in for the new glasses.

What kind of stitches are you using for this beadpoint? What kind of
thread and needle? I have no idea what size needle you use with a 15!
Are you sitting in your chair? Working off your lap? Tell, tell.

Aha! (answers below)

Would you find silamide in a sewing shop or a beading shop?

I've heard it can be found in either/both. In fact, it depends upon the shop
-- sometimes the bead store doesn't have it, but the upholstery shop has a few
dozen colors.
Also: Try eBay, and Google.com .

If it is/was
upholstery thread wouldn't it be a lot thicker than regular mercerized
cotton thread?

I haven't measured it.

How would it ever fit through the beading needle's eye?

Ah, but it does! I love it and use it instead of (icky!) Nymo, which I loathe.

The book I bought [thank you ebay]
suggested mercerized cotton thread run over regular hand soap to prevent
tangles/twisting.

Do yourself a favor -- a big favor -- and don't even bother. Using the right
materials will save you loads of time and frustration. If you like, I will
send you a huge, huge spool of Silamide, and you will not run out for a long
time. (900 yds) What color do you want?

Soap can get rancid because of the fat in it. Keep a cone of beeswax at
your workplace.

Oh -- and keep some sort of lip balm handy. If you keep your lips

covered
with
balm, and you lick the thread, the balm will act as a wax and help the

whole
process.

Interesting idea. I might try that. The book I bought [thank you ebay]
suggested mercerized cotton thread run over regular hand soap to prevent
tangles/twisting. I keep forgetting to get the *$*%*^ soap before getting
settled.

black lab/rotweiller and he produces more hair than I could ever have
thought a blooming short haired dog could in a life time - and he does it
daily! ARGH! But, I do have to admit that the St. Bernard which I grew up
with could drool like nothing I've ever heard of before or since!
