The girls must have be thrilled to get a chance to play between periods of
the ladies game! Which is your daughter...the taller blond or the gal with the nice long dark hair? This March, Halifax is hosting the Ladies Worlds and in conjunction with it there is going to be a tournament of girls All-star teams. There is a controversy going on as eligible players were to be limited to those playing on exclusively girls not mixed teams. Since our province is small, with a low population, a lot of girls opt to play on boys teams for the stronger competition...these girls would therefore not be eligible to play. I'm not sure it they sorted it out yet or not but it was starting to get nasty as parents of the girls from mixed teams were really up in arms that their girls wouldn't get the opportunity to play in this tournament. Mavia...who was never a 'hockey mom' but spent many hours freezing as a 'ringette mom'! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl Isaak" Newsgroups: rec.crafts.textiles.needlework Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 6:27 PM Subject: OT - for the hockey fans http://www.hockey1.org/mryha-HotNews.html Scroll about half way down DD is one of those shining faces! Cheryl,
You must be so proud! I bet you all had a blast! They are all so cute, with their big jerseys and skates. I can't believe they make goalie pads that small! My DD only wants to play roller hockey so I have signed her up for the spring. We'll see how it goes. Seaspray |

Always thrills me to see the UNH Wildcat logo...That's some big ice at the Whit for those girls to play on. PS Last night I nearly got beaned by the puck at Army vs. Quinnipiac. Fortunately the puck got caught in my hair. And never touched my skin. Then I turned around to find the puck had dropped in DH's lap. Close call. Phew. Donna @ West Point |

We have a friend who played at Quinnipiac - Academic All-Star - he's a great coach - had some of the USAH select teams (part of the National Team Devel Program). But, I hardly ever hear the name of Quinnipiac without doing a double take ;^) Ellice |

This March, Halifax is hosting the Ladies Worlds and in conjunction with it What fun - have some acquaintance/friends who'll be working those games (in stripes). there is going to be a tournament of girls All-star teams. There is a controversy going on as eligible players were to be limited to those playing on exclusively girls not mixed teams. Since our province is small, with a low population, a lot of girls opt to play on boys teams for the stronger competition...these girls would therefore not be eligible to play. I'm not This is a big thing in both USAHockey and CAHA. The Canadian rules are even more specific than the USAH ones. Essentially, to play in the national/international tournaments you have to be rostered on a team and declared as your intent to go forward with that girls team. The girls can be dual rostered on a youth team, but if they intend to go forward as an eligible girls team player, they must declare that they will not go forward to national (regional, districts, etc) tournament with the youth (boys/mixed) team. The intent of letting them dual roster is so that girls who don't have the opportunity to play girls hockey enough can still develop. Example being say a girl is on a team that plays out of Ottawa - but she lives 2 hours away, and can't make it there for all the practices, etc. But, she will play in the majority of the games. She can roster onto a youth team that plays locally, so that gives her the opportunity to skate, practice, develop - but essentially that youth team is her secondary team - and if they go forward in the provincial/national tournament path - she recuses herself. But she does go forward with the girls team. What has happened of late is some folks are abusing the system - dual entering a girls team as a youth team - supposedly for better competition - but really to double the number of games the girls play. This year I had to do a bunch of research on this for a local issue (in my ref and women's development hat). sure it they sorted it out yet or not but it was starting to get nasty as parents of the girls from mixed teams were really up in arms that their girls wouldn't get the opportunity to play in this tournament. I can imagine. It's a shame. For the most part - as the girls get older - it's much better for their skill development to continue on the womens track - rather than getting potentially hurt when the boys are physically outgrowing them. Sadly, if the good girls all go to play with the boys for "competition" then the level of the local girls programs stagnates - it's a chicken/egg thing. I like playing with guys - it makes you use your physicallity - but, the girls game makes you be physical without egregious hitting, and you have to play more skills, more speed. I'd imagine that if these girls were not rostered by the deadline onto a girl's team, then it's just too bad. They're considered youth players by CAHA, and that's the way it goes. I know several girls who play the required 10 games minimum (to be on the roster for nationals) with a girls team, but spend a lot of time with their youth teams which are local to them. Well, a couple of these girls play most of their girls' team schedule - poor parents driving a lot. With young kids, the parents don't often know all these rules, regulations, etc. But, as they get older - IMHO - they usually know - just ignore them until it effects them directly in some negative way. Mavia...who was never a 'hockey mom' but spent many hours freezing as a 'ringette mom'! OOOH - ringette - something that I guess is being replaced more and more with the growth of girls hockey. It's a fun game. We've had a couple of transplanted girls/women on some local teams (one on my women's team years ago) who were ringette players. One of them - the woman - man- was she vicious - talk about someone hitting you with a stick in the gut, head, face, slashing behind the knees - at any opportunity. Good skaters. ellice |
