Default knitting needles sizes

Am looking at some websites with knitting patterns for dolls. The needle
sizes say No.3 e.g.

To me (in Australia) No.3 needle is a thick one. As I am assuming the sites
are American, could it be that the two countries use opposite sizings.

Thanks for any help.
Katherine

I have a converter on my web site for finding the equivalent size (U.S.
imperial and metric):

No 3's could mean 3mm which are not very thick Au does use mm as sizes 3mm
is about right for doll patterns

Thank you all so much. It makes it clearer now.

Metric 3 [mm] = 11 uk , = has no usa equivalent
3.25m = 10 uk = 3 usa ,
3.5mm = 4 usa
3.75=9uk = 5 usa
6.5 mm = 3 uk = 10.5 usa
i hope that helps you

Does the pattern specify a gauge? You could figure out what size
needles to use if you knew the yarn size and the expected gauge.

Your needles are the same as ours in Canada, Katherine. You might want
to have a look at a needle conversion chart. There is one at
www.yarnforward.com
I am thinking that size 3 (if it is not metric) is about size 10 or 11
for us.
