Default Need help understanding instructions

Hi All,

What a great newsgroup with a lot of useful information :~)

About 2 weeks ago I decided that I would learn to knit. I bought some yarn
and needles and went to the internet and figured it out. A couple of days
later, my daughter had a new scarf and soon followed a matching hat. She is
very happy and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at myself.

Now I feel I want to take on my next "project", an afghan to match our newly
remodeled living room. So, I went searching the good ol' internet and found
something I want to make...here's the problem: I think I am following the
instructions but what I knit just doesn't seem to be correct.

Here is a link to the afghan: http://www.craftown.com/knit/knit44.htm

When I get to "Rep these 2 rows until 4 sts rem. Discard marker.
Next Row: K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1. P 3 sts tog. Cut yarn, leaving 18" for
sewing."

I don't really understand what this means...When do I bind off and set this
"Leaf" aside and start on the next?

I would really appreciate it if anyone out there can give me some pointers.

Thank you,

Michelle

Welcome to RCTY!

If my explanation is very confusing, just wait a little while, I'm sure
someone else will also post an explanation that will be better :-)

Expansion of the last row of instructions: You have 4 stitches on the
needle. Knit 1 stitch. Slip the next stitch from the left needle to the
right. Knit the next stitch. Pass the slipped stitch (from the right
needle) over the last knitted stitch you made (basically you are binding off
one stitch in the middle of the row). Knit the last stitch on the left
needle. There should be 3 stitches on the right needle now. Next row:
Insert right needle into all three stitches, and purl them together. One
stitch on right needle, none on left needle. Cut yarn, leaving an 18" tail,
and pull the tail through the remaining stitch on needle.

Good luck!

Right this minute, I can't get to the site.... I keep getting a refresh

you....
If I can get there, I'll personally check it out and reply too..... here on

Oh, wow! That is gorgeous! The instructions that you were given by SewSew
are right on, and about as clear as you can get.
I am printing that pattern now.

Michelle, SewSew Lady's explanation WORKS, I even tried it myself, first by
following the pattern as I normally would, then as if HER words were the
pattern.
Great job, SewSew Lady, couldn't have stated it better myself.

Michelle,

See, isn't that great, the ladies were able to help you out with your first big
project. You'll have to let us know how it turns out and maybe even show us a
picture. Welcome to the greatest group there is.

Michele,
Again, welcome to RCTY, and I wanted to tell you, you don't have to be
'good' to give advice, believe me!! I'm 45 years old, have been knitting
and crocheting since the age of six, and have had to ask advice too!!!!
Sometimes it's just 'not seeing the forest for the trees', and someone else
just has a fresh perspective!
Hugs,
Noreen
Ask Mirjam how MANY times she's had to explain doing a Mobius in the round
to me!!! See?
And, our Sonya helped me out on many a question when things didn't LOOK
right to me, as had Helen, who answered a Fisherman's Rib on machine to
me.....
see????
