Default OT ~ Roses in the garden

Some of our roses are already past their peak bloom, but others are just
coming on strong. Here's a few pink ones (and one lavender!) to drool over:

OR if you're on a *really* fast connection you can try this one page that
has they all:

Enjoy!

Most of our roses were purchased from a company up the valley from us called
Heirloom Roses. Here's their website:
http://www.heirloomroses.com/index.htm

They only sell roses grown on their own roots NOT grafted. The plants come
to you looking pathetically small, but they are much hardier and longer
lived once established than grafted roses. And you don't have to worry
about any viruses. Rose #2 & 4 and Rose #3 & 3a (two views of the same
roses) in the pictures are from there as are 5 and 7. We like very
fragrant flowers so we tend to choose for fragrance first and a visit to
their presentation gardens this time of year is an exercise in olfactory
overload!! I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Oh MJ!! WOW. I put that last photo up as my wallpaper -- I hope you don't
mind -- and I'm heading over to your house right now to just lie around in your
yard (haw). Sigh!

I hope we can find a house to buy with old rose bushes in the yard -- that
would be so perfect I'd get bruises from pinching myself. What a treat to see
yours. Have you lived there long enough for those plantings to actually be by
you? You have the most gorgeous yard! What a pleasure. Thank you.

Wow, I'd love that! I always choose fragrant ones too -- in my wish book -- I
don't understand planting a yardful of floral plants that don't smell like
heaven (or at all). I know why all those no-or-low-smell roses were developed,
but they're not for me.

Thanks for the compliment! I'll pass it along to the master rose nurturer -
my long-suffering DH! Yes, we've been here for 10 1/2 years now and all the
roses I photographed were planted by us. The two HUGE pink ones are nine
year old plants - we call them old-growth! LOL! They started life in our
garden as spindly 9" tall plants from Heirloom Roses. The lighter pink one
is called Lavender Lassie - why I have NO idea because it's pink, pink,
PINK! And I don't remember the name of the other one. Lavender Lassie
re-blooms at least twice in our season, but the other one is an extravagant
spring bloomer that sets the most amazingly huge orange hips in the fall.
It's a haven for small birds all year round.

I used to stand in front of a window that faces that particular rose when I
packed up my bead customers' orders. I could watch the antics of the birds
in and under that rose while I was packing. It loses almost all of its
foliage every year so by February the cover is getting pretty thin. Imagine
my surprise two years ago when a merlin (chicken hawk - the smallest raptor
we have here in the Willamette Valley) plummeted out of the sky down into
the rose bush and nailed a poor unsuspecting sparrow. I saw it do the same
thing a few more times but it finally gave up. Although this rose bush
offers lots of "snacks" in the form of sparrows and finches, it also comes
equipped with the most prodigious THORNS!! I think the bird decided the
return on investment wasn't worth the prickles!

And you're welcome to come visit any time - just bring your garden gloves
and sun hat. We always need another weed-puller around here and so far I
haven't been able to train any of the cats to do that....
