I started using safety pins to attach the receipt to each piece of fabric I
buy. I thought it would help me realize how much cash I was spending on my
"stash". Now I can see it will help my DH know the value of the stash when
I go to the great fabric store in the sky...

We couldn't do that here, too humid. The safety pins would rust onto the
fabric.

The other night I started an inventory of my fabric on my computer. This
is something I've been meaning to do for years, but was too busy (not
that I'm not busy now!). But I keep adding columns for information, and
will now have to use landscape format, there are so many. Here's what I
have, so far:

Color
Fiber
Description
Width
Yardage
Original Purpose
Bought from
Year purchased (approx.)
Cost (if known)
Suggested patterns

Good plan, Karen, keep us posted on your progress.
My reply to your email bounced back; can you un-block, or send

I went to an auction that had a HUGE amount of fabric from a deceased
estate. Most material was in plastic bags with a pattern, matching thread,
buttons or zip and in some cases a belt buckle.Often the pattens had
sugested alterations on them.
I bought hundreds of these bags. (they where auctioned in lots of about 30)
None of the patterns were cut, all the thread was unused. The pattens ranged
from about the 50's up to the 80's
There was also huge amounts of other materials in bulk , just wished I'd had
more money on the day!
I still feel guilty when I seperate the componante parts...It's as if I
should be using it for what she intended not what I need it for!!..Amelia

I wouldn't feel guilty. I bet the fabric is just totally ecstatic to be
used instead of stored!

I use stainless-steel straight pins.

When I go to make something, it's useful to know which is
the red linen and which is the red ramie.

I live in south Jersey so I understand the humidity problem. I use the
safety pins sold to quilters. So far, none has rusted, but just in case, I
only attach them to the salvage edges.

On those pieces of fabric which I wish to label, I simply write the info on a
small piece of paper, then grab a ready-threaded needle sticking out of the
pincushion and put in a couple of stitches (much like a french tack) to attach
it to the fabric. Hand sewing needles which have 6" or more of thread
remaining in them are never unthreaded in my house unless I need them for
another project, therefore I generally have at least a dozen of them, all with
different thread colors, sticking in one particular cushion.

My DH&I were discussing wills and I wanted to know what you all plan to do
with your sewing stash after you pass. Thought of being buried with it, but
I don't think there's a hole big enough. Neither him nor my DD or extended
friends or family (that will be around after my demise) have any idea of the
value of the equipment, fabric, etc. What do other's plan to do?

My DH has promised a large bonfire and a gaping hole in the ozone
layer. He has promised to remove my dead body from under the stash when
it topples and crushes me, if only for insurance purposes!

I am much more simplistic in my sort!
Rubbermaid roughtotes (68 l size)
Front written on in black felt marker with contents sorted as such:
laces and trims
lycras
denims and tapestries
cotton calicos
broadcloths
cotton fun prints
Christmas prints
and so on.....
This way I can find the items quickly when I need something.....
