i keep pieces down to one inch sq, even smaller if i really love the colour
like lime. even those wee tiny pieces are great in applique.
half a yard is a treasure for those who live outside the usa and pay heaps
for our addiction. go figure...

lap size quilts for the elderly folk in local nursing homes or wee small
quilts for the premies in hospital would be lovely.
a quilting bee within the church parish sounds in order.

I wish I had a digital camera to take pictures of it all. Words do not
express how much fabric there is here. We're talking hundreds of yards.
I've already dumped them out and fondled each piece. The next few days
I'm going to sit and measure each one. Some of it is already marked
because she bought it and never used it.

I'll give a brief list of what I've got. Remember that almost every
piece she sent is at least a yard. She said if it was smaller that 1/2 a
yard she threw it out.

Several solid colored cottons. Different shades of blues, browns, purples.
About 5 different ginghams.
Many cottons in different patterns. One is a beautiful red with blue and
gold butterflies on it. Several of them are oriental prints. Several of
them are toile (sp?) prints.
Some BEAUTIFUL silks. One is marked 5 yards, from a distance it looks
solid black, but up close it has Japanese pagodas and oriental stuff on
it. I usually don't like orientals, but I like it. I may keep it and if
I lose all this weight it would make a realy beautiful dress.
Many yards of terry cloth.
About 10 different plaids- they look like the Madras type, a few of them
may be homespuns.
Many yards of linen type material. Some of it I may keep and make
placemats and napkins out of.
Many yards of solid colored doubleknit polyester.
Some other fabics that are probably meant for drapery's.
1 large gaudy green, red and white, large flowered, window curtain.
1 or 2 large pieces of lace.
Some flannels.
Some sheer polyesters.

She did a lot of sewing when her children were growing up. Most of this
fabic was probably purchased during the 50's and 60's. Some of it's
really gaudy, but usable.

Some of it I wish I knew manufactures. Most of it isn't marked.
Do any of you have any ideas about dating material?

there is 1 large piece of a teal blue Hoffman batik with palm trees on
it. I usually don't like batiks, but i kind of like that piece.

1 piece that is marked "2 1/2 yards Indian Cotton" it looks handmade,
it's a sort of tan color with sort of burgundy colored spiderweb
looking stuff on it. It's really cool.

1 large piece that looks like hand-dyed tie-dye. Would be a perfect
backing for a quilt using hand-dyed fabric.

1 large panel that looks sort of like a southwestern rug. Has birds and
fish. I love it, except it's some strange colors. Teal, gold, orange,
white and yellow.

I'm supposed to go through it and keep what I want, and donate the rest
to the upcoming church rummage sale. That's part of why I'll go ahead
and measure the pieces. I'm the one who does 90% of the pricing at the
garage sale, and it will be easier to sell and deal with if I mark it now.

Wish i could keep it all, but I don't have enough room, and some of it I
don't think I would honestly ever use. I don't want to mess with an
e-bay account or I'd try to sell some of it. I think some of it's too
nice to put in the church sale.

I'm just in awe of all this fabric. I think I'll make her a lap quilt
with some of it. She's a really cool lady, and especiall nice for giving
me all this.
