Default Beads too nasty for me

Lol. When my daughter lost her first couple of teeth, I thought it would be
cool if I could encase the baby teeth in a bead. Weird, I know. I never
tried it, figuring the teeth would break.

DD and I were sitting with Sophie the Wonder Dog this evening, and DD was
explaining to the dog that we were still going to love her after she was
toothless. Sophie, as usual, sat there demanding a belly skritch.

Suddenly the child got an evil grin on her face. "Hey Mama, how about you
have the vet save the teeth and you can make a necklace out of them?"

I protested that making a necklace out of our own dog's teeth was way too
nasty to even consider.

"But Mama! you use bone, and that comes from animals, just ones you don't
know." Point taken.

I explained that Sophie's teeth are rotten and smelly, and that although I
have a reputation for drilling a hole in any old thing and calling it a

bead,
I really, really don't want Sophie's nasty old teeth.

The child looked at me and went, "Rotten. heh, heh, heh."

She got a pillow pitched at her head.

Your daughter is one twisted little sister. I like that in a female! Our
lives are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short not to have a sense of warped humor.

Way back when I was in college the first time and a would-be art major, our
instruction in design class gave us an assignment: Surprise Me!

One girl brought a live turtle sandwich... the turtles weren't hurt in any
way but they kept crawling out of the bread. I don't think they liked the
lettuce and mayo much. I think she got the most kudos.

I was roughly in second place. My offering was a velvet ring box... when you
opened it up, voila! there was a tooth. I don't remember whose it was,
probably mine... anyway the art instructor said it would have been better
though if I'd have glued a crystal to it. Art teachers, they are never
satisfied! LOL

But seriously, teeth of all kinds have been used in jewelry in many cultures
around the world. I personally don't wear them, even with crystals glued to
them! hahahahahahahha

In the Miami area I have often seen Cuban-American women (moms & grandmas)
wearing their children's first teeth (in a gold setting) as charms on a
necklace or bracelet. Personally, I think it's gross, but hey, what do I
know.

Many "primitive" (i.e. low-tech) cultures use them as combination

decoration
and status symbols -- hunters wear teeth from their kills to demonstrate

their
prowess. I think Fire Mountain sells some "tooth" beads, though they may

be
artificial.

What's a jingle dancer???

The young women at pow-wows who can move well... as opposed to the shawl
dancers....
The jingles are made of tobacco cans (lids?), and are sewn on the dresses. I
got the impression that to do the dance properly they all have to be chiming
the entire time, which means a lot of vigourous body movement is needed....
