Default Book Enabling

EdwardRHamilton.com has lots of discounted books, including plenty of
needlework stuff. Review the books on the website, but then print out the
order form and order by mail with a check ... they charge extra for
on-line/credit card orders.

I said "Get thee behind me, Satan!" And he got behind me, and he pushed me,
right into the arms of that temptress. No, I'm not going to tell you how much
that temptress is getting a check for, only that I'm dragging the rest of you
down with me.

Not meaning anything derogative about the owner, but isn't charging
extra for cc purchases illegal? simply curious, no other motive for the
question.

There are gas stations that offer less if you pay cash and they haven't been
stopped. Is it any different because you are coming at it from the opposite
end?

Many small shopowners pass on the fees that they are charged for
credit/debit card processing on to their customers rather than take a
hit for that themselves. One of the LNS's I occassionaly haunt does
this - she gets charged a 5% fee per transaction with a $2 minimum. I
don't know whether it's legal or not, but for her at least, the only
other option is to not accept cards at all because she feels the
processing fees are too high.

OK, turn it around the other way: you get a discount for paying cash. It's not
uncommon to be able to negotiate a discount on a large purchase by offering to
pay cash/check.

I don't think it's illegal, but it is against many merchant's agreements
(bank/MasterCard/Visa rules). You're not supposed to set minimums for
purchase, either. (Though one neighborhood Chinese restaurant says "no
credit card transactions under $15).

It is common in some places for customers and merchants to negotiate
cash discounts -- I have a friend from NYC who considers it a duty to
barter for a cash price!

Each credit transaction costs X percentage of the total cost (somewhere
between 2 and 5 per cent, depending on what percentage you've been able
to set with your bank based on your history - if you get a lot of
chargebacks, how long you've been with them, market conditions, etc.)
plus 25-35 cents per phone call (for approval - each transaction takes a
separate phone call) plus the phone call for "batch settlement"
(submitting total to the bank electronically). So it costs merchants a
good bit, and their prices have to reflect the "worst case scenario" and
cover those charges.

Here's the wording from the website of http://www.edwardrhamilton.com
"We do no billing and do not accept credit cards."

In another paragraph they state:
"If you wish to shop on the Web using MasterCard or VISA, you may click
on the link for HamiltonBook.com This is a separate business that
obtains its inventory from Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller and accepts
payment by credit card. HamiltonBook.com charges Postage & Handling of
$3.50 per order plus an additional 95¢ per book."

After following the link to the other site I found a different rate:
"Shipping charges are $3.50 per order plus $0.40 per item. We will ship
all available items immediately. If any item is temporarily out of
stock, we will make a second shipment as soon as possible. We do not
charge extra to make a second shipment and do not hold the shipment of
available items if one item is temporarily out of stock."

I'm not going to bother taking the time to see who really owns the
domains to figure out if these are truly two separate companies. IMHO,
they are skimming the fine line this way.
