A metal square hoop would probably leave nasty "corner" marks in the
fabric and might even tear the fabric if the user pulled too hard.

Not to mention with a wooden one there would be tremendous stress at the
corners, causing them to come loose, I would think.

Corners are awkward. It's much easier to slide a hoop to a new direction.

I remember a Brazilian instructor stating emphatically that one should
have the screw portion at 10:00 or 2:00 to avoid having threads get
caught. I turn my hoop so often it really matters little which
direction the clasp is. :-)

*deep laugh* I had a friend who would flip out when she saw that my hoop
wasn't at either the 10:00 or 2:00 position. It was if she thought it would
catch fire or something.

Hmm...what's that burning smell? ;-)

Here's a site that has pictures of the Hardwicke Manor hoops. They do look
good

You can get a square hoop - Hardwicke Manor from Germany. They're
quite expensive. Wyndham Needleworks has 3 sizes: 6x6, 8x8 or 10x10,
all 3/8" deep.

There's no picture unfortunately.

When I used a hoop -- I always kept the screw at 10:00 -- that way if I was
early on in a project and was confused about finding my place, at least I
knew which direction was which.

"Becky Andresen" had some very interesting things
to say about Best tightest needlework hoop:

wasn't at either the 10:00 or 2:00 position. It was if she thought it would
catch fire or something.

I prefer 12:00 myself. Marks the top nicely, and the way I work, the
hardware's a lot more out of the way.

I think paid less than what I would for a new one--if I remember right. I
think it's steel.

These are the kind I use. My favorite one is the one my mother (now
83) used when she was a girl. As Dianne said, you can still buy
these. I hope you didn't pay a lot for it!
I'm not positive about this, and I should test my own, but the older
ones I believe were made of steel and the newer ones from alumninum.
You can tell by holding a magnet next to it. Dianne?
