I do the kiln wash/alumina hydrate mixture, with a bit of powdered
graphite thrown in sometimes for variety, and occasionally I'll toss in
some diatomaceous earth for good times.

If I buy bead release for some reason, (I was once seduced by something
called "Purple Piffle") and it doesn't work out, I throw it in the mix
too. It evolves. I found a small larva living in it once. As long as it
works and is cheap, I'm happy.
