sewing beads on stretchy fabric
DD's class is having costume night this coming Thursday, and I wanted to make her
something she could also wear for dress up later, so i'm taking a little dance outfit i found at the thrift store and putting beads, sequins and rhinestones on it, so that she looks like an ice princess. Meanwhile, i'm having a challenge with the beads, and am hoping someone in the group can give me some advice. I can't find any elastic thread that is thin enough for the beading needles and the hex cut beads i'm using, so the only real way i can get the beads on without them popping off when DD puts on the leotard is to sew them on individually. This is so incredibly time consuming, that i was wondering if anyone would have some suggestions on what else i could do. Thanks for any advice you may have! -- Jalynne Queen Gypsy (snail mail available upon request) see what i've been up to at www.100megsfree4.com/jalynne |

Glue them on------Fabritac will do it, or the fabric shops sell sequin
glue.......works like a charm, and is washable. "Jalynne" wrote in message k.net... hmm, i tried that, but after it dried, and the fabric was stretched, the beads popped
right off. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess it's sewing individually for me. -- Jalynne Queen Gypsy (snail mail available upon request) see what i've been up to at www.100megsfree4.com/jalynne "Pat" wrote in message ... How about an applique instead of individual beads? Something from the
bridal dept of the fabric store. I've done this before on my daughter's ballet leotards for Halloween. -- Lori in Peoria, IL "Jalynne" wrote in message k.net... Here is what I do when I sew beads on stretchy fabric.
For areas that don't require lot's of stretch I don't put them in a hoop, but for most other areas I stretch them about as they will be on the body in a hoop. Then, I thread a beading needle with WOOLY NYLON (the serger spool type) (using one of those threaders - of course). I try to meander the pattern so it doesn't follow a straight line. If it goes back and forth some it allows more stretch. I use double thickness of the wooly nylon so sometimes it isn't possible to pass through each bead twice because it is a squeeze. When you tie off securely, be sure to use a drop of glue on the knot just to be safe. It still isn't quick......but it beats doing them individually and they will stay on! I use a different technique, altogether, and have found it to work well for
the skaters and dancers that I sew for. The wooly nylon does not stand up to their routines so I use the regular beading thread - no stretch, but very strong! If you use a sequin and bead combination there is already some 'give' and then when sewn on loosely (i.e. do not snug the thread each stitch) these will have enough stretch in the sewing. For beads alone, I sew my anchor line on very loosely and next lines are zigged and zagged into the previous line. I never knot off individual beads as there is nowhere to stretch to that way. ( I am probably being clear as mud with all this, but what I'm trying to say is that you go up through the sequin, catch a bead, and go back down through the sequin and then on to the next spot.)
