Yarn weight help: Koigu PPPM
I have a tasty looking crochet sock pattern (Monday Jan 2, 2006 from the
Crochet Pattern-a-Day calendar) that calls for Koigu PPPM yarn. Now, I want to know if this is going to end up another disaster before I go throwing money at Koigu to buy a couple skeins of the stuff, so I'm going to make a pair first out of some yarn I have in my stash. The problem, you ask? I'm happy to tell you: Koigu's website *SUCKS* and I can't find anywhere what the weight of that yarn is so I can do a substitution. Do any of you lovely people have a spare skein of PPPM around that you can look at and tell me if it's fingering, DK, worsted, or whatever? What is Koigu thinking with that site? They need a bit of help there. --Threnody |

I went to Ram Wools and here's what they say: I'd say it's a regular sock weight or fingering. I've used PPPM in a scarf and it's GORGEOUS! Painter's Palette and Premium Merino (Koigu ) Handpainted 28sts = 4" on 3mm (US 2 or 3) needles 100% Merino Wool 158m/175yds/50g |

Yarn weight help: Koigu PPPM

spewed forth : Did you try asking Google for information? I plugged in "koigu kppm yarn weight" and got back lots of hits, including a distributor with this information for KPPM: Stitches: 7 | Needle: 1-2 Content: 100% merino wool Yardage: 175 | Ca Hand Wash Weight: Fingering Weight Sock Yarn Cherry Tree Hill uses the same yarn for its sock line. Louet Gems Merino is somewhat less expensive version of the same basic sort of yarn. Lorna's Laces sock yarn knits up at the same gauge and has some nylon content so will wear better than the three I've already mentioned. All-wool socks and wool/nylon socks full differently so keep this in mind if you make your swatches with a standard commercial sock yarn such as Opal. A site worth bookmarking is http://www.wiseneedle.com There's a rather extensive yarn database there as well as some nifty patterns. I didn't check but I'm sure Koigu is in the DB as are most other popular yarns. A personal observation: 100% wool socks seem to wear quickly at the toes and heels. I save the KPPM, LGM and CTH for low-traffic items such as scarves, caps and baby sweaters. +++++++++++++ Reply to the list as I do not publish an email address to USENET. This practice has cut my spam by more than 95%. Of course, I did have to abandon a perfectly good email account... |
