Default sterling silver vs. 14k white gold

Which is the stronger metal as far as rings are concerned?
Such as, which is more prone to bending, breaking, etc. and will last
longer under constant wear.
Not necessarily tarnishing.

There is no alloy in silver, wich could be made as strong as all
possible alloys in white gold.
White gold is harder.

Why Do You want to kow that?

Best wishes,

She's asking about sterling, which is an alloy. In the US, it's .925
with the rest usually copper.

Rignt. And as Heinrich correctly states, there are no silver alloys, including
sterling silver, which are as hard as any of the white gold alloys. He was not
saying there are no silver alloys, only that none of them are as hard as white
golds.

You shouldn't worry about the strength of both metals. Under constant

Wow. You're quite an optimist, aren't you? Or perhaps you define "normal use"
rather differently than most of the rest of us, who'd like to be able to just
put on a ring, and wear it...

While both metals will last quite well, to say they'll last longer than we will
either suggests a lot more durability that I've seen in silver or gold jewelry,
or it suggests that we've got rather short lifespans...

Hmm. Maybe that isn't so optimistic after all...

I would expect, in full time wear, a typical silver ring such as has been
described in this thread (the one with the amber) to be pretty worn out and
unattractive within about 5 years of constant wearing by most people. And I'd
expect that the same ring, made in 14K white gold, might last perhaps twice
that long, if that.

If you want it to wear a lot longer, make it in platinum, which is much more
resistant to wearing down, but even platinum won't quite last forever.

While we often see, in doing jewelry repair work, rings that may be almost a
hundred years old, made in white gold, it's probable that most of these were
NOT subjected to full time daily wear. In times past, it was more common for
one's finest jewelry to be worn more for special occasions, rather than just
all the time.

And the greater rate at which silver will wear down is one reason why most good
handmade silver jewelry tends to be made in somewhat heavier guages of metal
than the typical guage used in commercially made white gold jewelry. That way,
it WILL last a good long time.

cheers

Peter

Ah, I forgot about sentence order.
