New QI
We lost Hodge to old age at the beginning of 2010 and Kiwi died very
suddenly of Feline Peritonitis at the beginning of October. Today Katy joined our family. She is a 5 month old rescue cat (she was dumped at a re-cycling centre with her two brothers and her mother who disappeared two days before the rescue people were contacted). Despite a very rocky start and three months recuperating at a foster home she is a very loving little girl and full of bounce. Mia isn't quite sure yet, but I am hoping that after losing her best friend Hodge, and recently her brother Kiwi she will soon come round to looking after the new little girl. DH and I are both besotted! Tonight Katy will sleep in the conservatory (where our cats usually sleep) but Mia will have the run of the house so will probably sleep on our bed or in the spare room which she loves but isn't usually allowed in, so special treats for her. She's so sweet, Sally - and has a hint of Hodge about her. Mia looks to
be a thinking little person, so she might take a while thinking. I do hope Katy will lift the sadness you've had this year. I so understand .... Her name is just right. Hope you have a peaceful night! .. In message , Sally Swindells writes We lost Hodge to old age at the beginning of 2010 and Kiwi died very suddenly of Feline Peritonitis at the beginning of October. I can see why you're besotted! She's a love, and it looks as though she's making herself right at home.

New QI
Thanks everyone.
The new inmate is currently being taught (?) that our house is not covered in scratching posts - that is the big sisal covered thingy she gets placed on at frequent intervals! Countertops aren't a problem yet, but the others learned so so will she! Mia is gradually getting used to Katy who can't understand why 'big cat' doesn't want to be her best friend. Mia wants to be treated with respect as senior cat. Katy has to be kept inside until she has been spayed at the end of the month. Thank goodness it is too miserable weather to open windows - she has seen the world outside and is desperate to explore. Going through doors to the outside takes considerable planning on our part! How on the earth do those of you with permanent house cats cope. Thank goodness we don't have a cat flap (I like to supervise what presents are brought in!). Our garden is well fenced - not that that means much to an active cat, we only have an access road, and over the fence are two pet-free gardens and then a very very large garden (small park size) belonging to The Red House where the composer Benjamin Britten lived (now an archive centre for academics studying his music). When we had DD's cat Fred for a three months stay about 7 years ago, he got a Christmas Card from the Red House addressed to 'Fred the Cat' as he was a frequent visitor - we wondered why he was getting so fat! Oh and we don't have dangerous wild animals here either - so cat heaven. Sounds like you are all having a good time. None of the cats here make an
attempt to dash out. On the rare occasion a door is left open they stare out awhile before they head out to explore. There hasn't been one of those field trips in years though. I have been feeding a couple of strays (fallout from the housing foreclosures, I think) They do try to come in. One dashed in with me the other day. Luckily dh just picked him up and tossed him back out before he got to the sleeping dogs! Taria |

My cats have never been outside and have no urge to do so. They do love to
sleep on the window sills to get fresh air, but that's it. We can leave the screen door open, and all they'll do is look. Gen " How on the earth do those of you with permanent house cats cope. Thank goodness we don't have a cat flap (I like to supervise what presents are brought in!). |

This evening Katy started her QI duties. She chose something small to
start with. The fosterer did say she was a determined little cat! She chose the tea-cozy I was putting the binding on. She just pushed and pushed her way in - there was no arguing - she pushed! I think it met her approval!
