Default Printing on fabrics

I'm new to the quilting newsgroup here.

Our kids are in Drum Corps and they age out at 21. Our son has been at
it for 5 years (has 2 more seasons after this one) and our daughter for
4 (has 5 more seasons after this one). So, I want to take pictures of
them over their years in Drum Corps to make a quilt for them when they
age out. It would be a history of their time in Drum Corps and cover
any and all Corps they march with.

Soooooo, I've been looking at printing pictures directly onto material,
printing onto paper sheets and ironing the image on material, etc. Has
anyone done this - pros/cons, ideas????

I did this years ago, and found it extremely difficult to get a good
quality. I suggest you invest in some of the fabric sheets, and print your
pictures on the fabric sheets. You just run your fabric sheets through your
printer just like you were printing on paper. That way, you aren't trying
to iron an image onto something. This saves you several steps. You can add
borders, sashing, etc to your photos, and it will make a nice quilt. The
last one that I made was for my husband for his birthday. I took lots of
the pictures we had taken on a trip to 3 National Parks, scanned them into
the computer, and printed them on the fabric sheets. I added fabric blocks
of blocks of bears, put sashing between the rows, and it made a nice
wallhanging/small quilt.

I haven't done the iron-on technique, but I've heard that it has results
that are not all that long-lasting. Personally, I like to print directly
on fabric with an ink-jet printer. I've used Bubble Jet Set with good
results, and it works out to be comparatively inexpensive. However, the
pretreated sheets available are lots more convenient, if you don't mind
paying for convenience. Of those, the Printed Treasures (NAYY) are my
favorite; they give excellent results, and the fabric is soft enough to
be able to stitch through easily. HTH.

I second that....which one? DD was in DC for a couple years. In fact,
we're heading out on a roadtrip to visit grandparents and will have a stop
over each way so we can hit a show. DD was in Colts. A great organization.
Not top 12, but certainly a wonderful experience. She would love to be that
tan and trim again!!!!! :-)
I suggest using Bubble Jet set to treat your fabric before printing with
your printer. There are also a couple pretreated sheets out that work very
well. Printed Treasures is one. Foggy brain can't remember the
other....catching a cold and coughing my head off. Won't that make for a
nice houseguest??? Geez.

The only thing I would like to add to the good suggestions you have had
is to make sure you get the correct printing fabric for your printer.

I tried this a few years ago to make a train quilt for a friend's son. I
used one of the iron-on types (I don't recall the brand) and wasn't at all
pleased with the results. It took about 3 tries to get a good image, and
with 16 blocks in the quilt, it got rather expensive.

Peter started with Teal Sound (Div 3) back in '01. The next year our
daughter, Mandi, joined him there. He had 4 years with Teal and she had
3. They are now with Spartans (Div 2) and loving it. We're a military
family and they go to Corps close to where we live at the time.

We're trying to figure out if there is a way we could afford Cavies for
our son next year. He's worked with one of the Cavies staff already and
has the talent for it. Just a matter of financing the dues and travel
from ME to IL until move in time.

We love Drum Corps and will continue to follow it and go to shows even
after both kids age out. I'm really hoping they won't do finals in CA
in '07, that is our son's age out year. We couldn't afford to go out
there for finals and I really want to be there for his age out!

Nice to meet some Drum Corps fans here! )

Peter knows and has worked with Mark Magahee (?sp) from Cavies. I spoke
with him and he pretty much said he would probably make Cavies if he
tried out. Now it's a matter of finances.

Nothing like them. Didn't know about the finance thing (I didn't
march drum corps just followed it around alot lol) Went to DCI finals
in Buffalo NY 1000000 years ago. Don't they offer some sort of
financial help or anything? Sad that someone talented enough to make
it in would be turned away :/

Os he a horn guy or a drum guy? I was engaged to a french horn player
but the cavie drum line was always my favorite shhh
