Default ?? Scotch Guard for Fabrics

Hello,

I am going to make a cloth Christmas elf to dress up my front porch. The
porch has a roof that will protect the doll from drenching rain, but he
still needs to be as waterproof as possible just in case foul weather hits
when I'm not home to rescue the little guy. I thought I would spray the
body fabric with Scotch Guard before sewing to make sure the muslin is fully
soaked while sparing the stuffing. I am a little concerned the Scotch
Guard will gum up my sewing machine. Has anyone tried sewing with fabric
that has been coated first and encountered problems? I will keep aside a
section of fabric to use for his face which will be combination of soft
sculpture and fabric paint. I didn't think the paint would stick to
waterproof fabric. I'll spray his face after the paint has set.

Thanks for your help.

Liz

Why not spray him down after he is made??? Any chance of making him a
raincoat?

I love the idea of a raincoat! Too cute! I didn't want to spray him after
he was made because I thought the Scotch Guard would wet the stuffing and
make it clump up. I can do a little test to see what happens. Thanks for
the raincoat idea!

Spray the ScotchGuard on in light coats like spray paint. It shouldn't
affect the stuffing at all.

If you like a rain coat, you may also want to buy this
little guy an UMBRELLA! Look in Doll Accessories at Jo
Ann or other store.
We've used Scotch Guard (tm)) on auto upholstery,
cushions, sofas, and so on. NO problems with the stuffing.

I thought about an umbrella, but never considered a doll size. I thought
about a child's size but that would be too big. I wonder if I can remove
the fabric from the doll's umbrella and replace it with fabric from the
little rain coat? A matching set! Accessories are everything, you know.
Do you think that will work?

Should work fine. Too fun! You must promise to post a
photo when this project is on the porch!
Be careful though. If Santa's Reindeer see you've made
an ensemble for an Elf, they may demand the same!!
