Default OT Strange

I don't know if any of you have had this problem recently - but it is
strange. I get these requests for custom work from "strangers" about
once a week. I politely answer etc... and sometimes they even respond
back. Anyway, it was happening more than usual so my son did some sort
of search thing on the system (I host with him and we have our own
servers) anyway, it appears that the same person has done about five or
six of these requests under different email addresses.

I can't imagine why people waste their time sending false emails, and
posting fake auctions (well, the auctions I can see - they want to
steal money) it is just such a sad way to live.

I agree, I can't imagine what these people are thinking. I know someone
who has fake people hassling him all the time through his website, he
also has just a small business. They even initiated several fraudulent
paypal payments with different identities for under $20.00 each. Why
would anyone waste their time?

Well they will try to pay with fake money and have your product. Then they
can sell it on ebay or some where else. And make money. That is what they
are trying to do.

It's the oddest thing... some people obsess on getting special orders
from artists who don't normally do them, as if it's some kind of special
sign of status. I've been rather persistently harrassed by someone
wanting a special order... the funny thing is, if I put something up
that is what they wanted, they don't buy it. Because it's not "specially
made" for them.

It might be amusing to reply to the person and cc all the other
addresses they're using as well... I bet they won't keep asking after that.

That's just odd. I can understand the appeal of having a truly unique
piece, made only for you, but I wouldn't hound an artist about making
me one..especially if they don't do special orders.

There's also the fact people don't realize that custom orders can be
tricky. You get people who say "well, that's nice, but I want this tiny
detail changed, and that color wasn't really as nice as I thought it
would be, and would you mind completely redoing it and can you have it
all done within two days? What do you mean, that will cost extra?"
I had people like that when I was making and selling my little
crocheted dolls.

If you like something, buy it. It doesn't matter if the artist made it
specifically for you.

Silly people.

I have heard (don't know if it's true) that people who do truly "custom"
orders (ie. try to create what's in the buyer's head, rather than just
re-make past work) have a really high rate of returns... it's easy to
understand how that would happen, because it's hard enough to get what's
in *my* head to translate into glass, LOL!

Interesting thought Kalera. I actually do a pretty large custom bead
business and have very few problems with returns. Of course I won't make
anything custom that I don't think I could sell elsewhere anyway, and I
always send a photo for final approval before shipping.

Anyway I'm lately running so short on inventory that I figure if for some
reason the customer changes his/her mind it will just be happy inventory for
me. Seldom if ever happens though, they sell. Same with ebay. Not getting
bids, while a bit sad, is actually a gift to my low inventory levels for
shows/shops so it's all good. Sometimes when a set doesn't get bids until
the very end I get excited thinking that I'll have that set to sell at a
show and then at the last minute the set gets a bid and it's ALMOST sad!

Plus custom orders are kind of a fun challenge. I won't take any "make 300
of the same bead" type orders though...UGHHHHH.

I get a lot of RFQs or RFI's that don't pan out. And sometimes (often
really) folks write for info and then come back quite a while later (like a
month or more) and then they order. It's all good. I love talking about the
glass anyway so it's no biggie to me if they order or don't .
