Default followup to ventilation of electric kiln - fan selection

Hi all,

I much appreciated the advice I received on venting my electric kiln. I'm
getting closer to installing my vent and I'm wondering about fan selection.

I found a Elicent inline type fan, mainly sold for greenhouse venting I
believe. It's got more than enough CFM but I'm wondering how the motor
will stand up to the gases in the exhaust? Is that stuff corrosive? Has
anyone used a motor of this style (It's called an Inline duct fan).

Thanks,

Zander

It's definitely corrosive if you get close enough to it. Just look at what
it does to your kiln elements and you'd see
how oxidized they get.

I would still recommend putting the fan as near to the outlet wall of the
building (and as far from the kiln) as possible.
I do not believe that the fumes are "as" corrosive when cooled, for some
reason. Might just be wishful thinking on my part, though. I have no proof
either way.

The corrosive in question is Sulfuric acid. It works cold as well as hot. I
discovered in an unvented kiln room with a window that it etches the glass
after a couple years. So, yes, it will corrode a motor mounted within its
stream. The way I got around this was to use a squirrel cage fan at the end of
the outside pipe (sheltered from the rain and snow). You can control the
suction by how closely the fan is mounted to the end of the pipe.
