The internet is a great tool, and allows us to accomplish certain goals in ways that were simply not possible before. All of us here at Ganoksin are working hard to build a strong pool of information, freely accessible, for the benefit of the trade and the general public, promote jewelry art, community, and critical thought in a world that doesn't always seem to make sense. If you believe in what we're doing, you can help! http://www.ganoksin.com/donate/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In This Edition of Tips From The Jeweler's Bench http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/tip_sear.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Wire Works! - The Work of Three Contemporary Wire Artists By Nina Graci Working on the most meticulous and precise scale, three contemporary wire artists, Barbara SilverStein, Nikki Feldbaum and Biba Schutz create jewelry that is broad in appeal and expansive in effect.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/wire-works.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Dreaming in Metal - The Jewelry of Steff Korsage By Nina Graci Jewelry artist Steff Korsage followed her own determined path to find her own distinct voice, making hollow forms from metal - as individual beads and elements in eye-catching jewelry. One night in 1992, Steff Korsage had an auspicious dream. She dreamed of metal, geometric pieces of metal, filling the sky with their fascinating shapes. Instead of rolling over and going back to sleep, Korsage did what any sensible metalsmith would do..... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/steff-korsage.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The Metalsmith Papers (1978) Machine Tool Technology: An Aesthetic Application By Gary S. Griffin This paper is initiated with the reference that one selects process because of aesthetic need. The premise of technology as an end in itself insures the triumph of the means (process) over the ends (aesthetic). Only ones aesthetic ends deserve a primary position in this hierarchy. This paper is submitted not as a redundant recital of a machine tool technology already supported by vast volumes of technical literature; rather, it seeks to nourish one's aesthetic vocabulary which consequently may demand the use of that technology. The title, "Machine Tool Technology: An Aesthetic Application", is the result of these thoughts.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nena...technology.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Japanese Patinas - The Patina Studio By Eitoku Sugimori It is impossible to pretend that a single description of tools, materials, and equipment will suit all needs. Obviously these elements will depend on the scale of the work you do, the layout of your studio, and the resources at your disposal. A sculptor working in large-scale bronze castings will have different needs from a jeweler.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/patina-studio.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Testing Japanese Patina Solutions By Eitoku Sugimori It is important to understand that many variables will affect patina results. Our tests were made on smooth, rolled metal. Textures will change the color, and cast metal has a different structure that can also influence color. These samples include no solder, and because solder is a different alloy, it will react to the solutions differently. Changes in temperature, length of exposure, climate, and strength of the chemicals wilt all influence colors.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nena...as-samples.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. The Creation of AGTA Spectrum Award Winning Cufflinks by Bill Holman By Mark B. Mann These cufflinks designed by Bill Holman were award winners in the AGTA 2004 Spectrum design competition. They are 18-karat yellow gold and feature Drusy agates with a 24-karat deposition layer over the exposed crystal formation. The small gemstones are 1.50 millimeter diamond-cut round sapphir es. Editor John Mack, Senior Keeper at the British Museum, tackled the daunting task of documenting the traditional jewelry of non-European countries.
