I'm curious as to how long this LQS has been opened. To have a large
inventory, you need lots of cash. So perhaps s/he will acquire more fabric
bolts in due time. As for what I would purchase, I tend to stay away from
things I can buy at Joann's with a 50% or 40% (these days) coupon, such as
Olfa blades, certain rulers etc... I would look for things that are unique
and/or I would love to own. Anyway, it's not like you have to spend it all
in one day ;o).

Good luck!

I was given a $100 gift certificate for a local quilting store that stocks

a
suprisingly SMALL amount of fabric (disappointingly little). They do seem

to
have a selection of books and doo hickeys (templates, rulers, that kind of
thing). What would you buy?

Is it usually less to buy by the bolt? How many yards are on a bolt?

I buy it at Joann's when it is on sale; it isn't any cheaper by the
bolt, but then I have it when I need it and I can just cut off what I
need. There were 50 yards on the bolt that I have now.

At the local Hancock's, there is a discount for buying whatever amount
is left on any bolt. It isn't a huge amount, but every little bit helps!

If you order Moda muslin by the bolt from Hancock's in Paducah, it's
$24.98 for a mini bolt of 12 yards. This is the same Moda muslin my LQS
sells for $6.98 a yard, so even with the shipping charge, the price is
attractive.

Ohmigawsh!! My DGD would have to have everyone of them. She has loved pink
since she was old enough to choose on her own. I mean absolutely every
thing is PINK!! Of all the shades there are of pink - her favorite is
fuschia pink.

"Backing fabric" is what I use on the back of the quilt. I use w-o-w
prints, flannel, c-o-c's or t-o-t's. Some folks like plain muslin - all can
be bought in 90 inch widths expressly for backing quilts. But any 45 inch
fabric can be pieced into a backing if you don't mind seams and I sure
don't.

Having only completed one quilt I assumed that you bought the backing
fabric
to match the quilt.
How can you buy backing in advance? Or is backing fabric something
different
across the pond?

6 yards of 45 inch wide fabric will back a queen size quilt with ease.

I've been buying 4 yards if I find something on sale that will make a good
backing. Might not be enough for a really large quilt, but I'd either buy
that backing after I've finished the quilt or piece it out of a couple of
different fabrics/

quilts and baby quilts, because the backing often shows when the quilt is
used. I do buy that in advance if I find a good sale, because my concern
is usually just that the backing harmonize somewhat with the quilt top;
it doesn't have to be an exact match. If I find something that would make
a good backing for a very good price, I'll buy the whole bolt. Lately
most of my quilts have been rather scrappy, so finding backing fabric
that will harmonize hasn't been too difficult.

NAYY, but I have ordered from them in the past and been very satisfied.

They also have a pink cap with their embroidered bike and "Life is Good"
logo.

Pink....................my least favorite color. And yes I have made a
quilt with a lot of pink, and blue, in it......... made me hate it even
more. I do use some pink, have some in the stash, but it really has to
be a situation in which nothing else will do.
Sigh.

And forget about me * wearing * pink (shuddering madly).
