[OT] My vacuum cleaner sucks
Rather, it gets clogged up and doesn't.
Our "highly rated" Kenmore Progressive upright almost got attacked with an ax yesterday (by me). I've had it with that piece of ... junk. The hose between the brush roller area and the bag clogs at the drop of a dog hair and has to be reamed out with a broom handle every time the bag fills up. Actually, before - if I wait until the bag light comes on, the hose is already plugged up. And it has power-assisted forward drive ONLY. Which means it requires double the effort to pull it backward! Didn't the engineers ever watch anyone actually _use_ one of these things? So I'm in the market for a new vacuum and would appreciate hearing opinions, pro and con, of the vacuums you use. I need one that is good on carpet and sucks down dog hair (without clogging) and then asks for seconds. Slurping seed beads out the carpet without getting indigestion would be a plus (keeping this semi on-topic G). Have any of you tried the new Dyson "Ball" and is it as easy to use and as powerful as advertised? Any other Dysons? They're pretty pricey, but I'm curious how they work anyhow. Vacuuming is decidedly NOT my favorite sport, and the house quickly goes to hell in a handbasket when using the vacuum is a frustrating, rather than rewarding (look at all that hair that came up!), experience. No cats or dogs to report on, but my dog-owning neighbor (who kept an
immaculate house) said that an old fashioned carpet sweeper (no electricity, just spiral brushes--Bissell was the main manufacturer as I recall) was much better than a vacuum for dog hair. I tried it when I had cats, and I have to agree. As for vacuum recs, I haven't had to do anything but change the bag on my Sharp upright that I bought 7 years ago. Good luck! I have to say that I absolutely love my vacuum, but not using it. I
have a Eureka whirlwind lightspeed with the duster attached. I hardly use the duster but this thing sucks up dirt and hair you can't even see. My MIL purchased one on my recommendation and loves hers as much. I've looked at the dysons but I would be hard pressed to purchase one of those when I got this one much cheaper. |

Dyson, Dyson, Dyson. Oh and did I mention Dyson? I love my Dyson. I must
have a thing for British engineers. I married one. But, seriously, the Dyson vacuum is awesome. We have a Dyson and it certainly sucks the dust up. Dh uses it.
Myself being only 5 feet tall finds it a bit heavy and unwieldy especially trying to pull the tube out when I want to use the nozzle ends. It is certainly a good cleaner. I know this may sound insane, but do you have any vaccuum cleaner repair
& reconditioning shops around you? I hate new vaccuum cleaners because they kept breaking on me, so I got an old, reconditioned Filter Queen and a mustard-yellow reconditioned Hoover Convertible Elite, for under $250 each. They have lots of sucking power and are pretty much bulletproof, and indefinitely repairable. The only drawback is that the Hoover is much heavier than modern, plastic vacuum cleaners.
