Default Skutt Kiln Brick replacement

I have an old Skutt 818 kiln that has some of the bottom bricks broken from
the element down. I have never tried to replace bricks but if I do install
some new ones, do you have to put some kind of compound between the bricks
or just place them together dry. I can not find much info on the subject..
If anyone has done this please give me directions.
Thanks
