Default needle problem, help needed

I have a standard gauge Brother machine.
I have just fitted a new retaining bar since I was having trouble with
needle selection.
I now find that I cannot put the needles into holding position without
them lifting out of the bed.
Have not had this problem before but am hoping it is me, not the machine,
that has done something wrong.

The easiest way to do it is to remove the bar again, then insert it again
slowly as you hold the needles down with a ruler or something . As it goes
through, move the ruler along.
You'll see them move as the bar goes over the top

Thanks for your reply which I found today having thought through and
corrected the problem yesterday.

(You were correct...wrong-way-upness was indeed the cause!)

The retaining bar goes on top of the needles, not underneath them
