Default Quilting in Scotland

I posted this on the sewing groupbut didn't get any replies and
thought this might be a better forum

I will be in Scotland this June with some patchwork and quilting
friends from around the world.
We shall mainly be around Stirling/Edinburgh and Glasgow and would
love to visit some relevant shops for fabric etc.,

Having spent an evening surfing the web looking for these I have come
away emptyhanded .
Are there any specialised patchwork and quilting shops in these areas?
What about line stores in the UK, or are these not as popular there
as they are in other countries?

Hullo EJ
I expect Jo will answer when she is back at the weekend, about any shops
in Scotland.
I can tell you that there are no shops like the US' Joanns or
Australia's Spotlight. All are independent and privately owned (as far
as I know, anyway).
There is one that I do know of - Kaleidoscope. It is a marvellous
bookshop which has just opened a fabric shop. I can't tell you where it
is, though; but I think the bookshop was in Glasgow? Perhaps it will be
on Google, if you can use the shop name. I think there is also one in
Perth?
Sorry not to be of more help.
Hope you have a good time anyway.

Hi,

here are a couple of links tospecialist fabric shops in Scotland. Both
Edinburgh and Glasgow (not sure about Stirling) have large department stores
such as John Lewis which sell a range of dress making fabric, needles etc
etc. There also a chain called Remnant Kings although this is dress
making/upholstery only and not quilting stuff.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the south side of glasgow in
particular has a high Asian population, so if you're interested in gorgeous
sari fabrics or silks it might be worth a visit there too. You'll have a
fantastic time, Scotland is a beautiful place!

I was quite surprised there seems to be no online fabric stores, I
always thought there would be more choice due to the larger populaton.
Oz Spotlight [and Lincraft] is good but I have this dreadful problem
with htem. There is one just down the road and my car automatically
turns in the car park every time I pass, and my purse sort of opens
itself on the counter. I already have two drawers of fat quarters that
I'm sure "I" didn't buy and I only started quilting in December.

Great! two favourites in one place - I'll certainly do a Google
search.

Thanks Patti.
I'm really looking forward to my stay.
We are a group from around the world, who' met' through another
newsgroup [not sewing]
and none of us have ever physically met.
We are doing block swaps and it is my, and some others, first efforts
at quilting [?patchwork] so I hope my results stand up.
We picked a medley from Keepsake Quilting in colours that made us
think of Scotland
and had to do two star blocks for each girl, using at least 4 of the
fabrics, and could add two of our own choice
so it will be interesting to see the results.

Funny how ones comprehension becomes distorted - we have a large
number of Asians here in Melbourne but somehow I have never
associated the thought of any in Scotland. Their fabric shops have
gorgeous materials.

You'll have a fantastic time, Scotland is a beautiful place!

I know I was born there [g]

Edinburgh has a shop, and so does Broughty Ferry (seaside town, now
a suburb of Dundee). Give me an evening to find their phone
numbers... I know the Dundee shop doesn't have a webpage, but the
Edinburgh might. There's fabric to be had in Stirling - I shopped
there. Give me a bit of time, and I'll get back to you.

As Pat said, none of these are enormous or carry the variety of
quilting fabrics which you may be used to in US stores, or online
stores, or in big Australian cities.
Having said that, I have listed some stores I have been to, which
carry patchwork fabric and each is a very nice shop. If you are in
the area of any of them, it is worth a trip!

The Sewing Station
110 Gray Street
Broughty Ferry
(beside level train crossing and there is a fabulous Italian ice cream
shop on this street as well!)

Here are some shops in Stirling:

Pembertons 21-25 Friars Street
This shop sells sewing machines, and has very little fabric, but if
you are in the area, stop in

Remnants Kings Central 1-5 Port Street
This is a chain of stores which sell fabric, but it includes curtain
fabric and garment fabric.

McAree Bros Ltd 55-59 King Street
This place had Kaffe Fassett fabrics when I was there last spring - no
idea what they have now, but it's not a lot of fabric. I bought some
templates there (I think for painting) but they make good quilting
stencils as well!

I know this will be too late for EJ in Australia but I am sure someone
else will find the information useful :-)

Kaleidoscope's new shop is in Glasgow, or at least the Glasgow area if
not technically within the city boundary... They have a shop in the
same "complex" as Dobbies garden centre in Milngavie - on the opposite
side of the car park from Dobbies itself. Dobbies web site
conveniently has a map and even mentions Kaleidoscope.

http://www.dobbies.com/centres/locat...ntre=milngavie

I did have the address and phone number at one point but seem to have
lost it somewhere - probably a good idea given that I live only 10
minutes away and that is quite expensive enough!
