I am a history buff and an avid reader of historical works. I have 2 DDs in FL and their children have taught me so many things about their state I had not read. All have studied their state history, of course in school, but three of the four are also history buffs and make a point to find out something new to tell me each time I visit. When I retired, and moved to the Los Angeles area for a couple years, I learned a lot of CA history I never learned in school, by visiting museums, historical sites and just reading. Both states have an appearance of being young because of the tourist meccas but don't be fooled by that, both states have a rich history like most other states, some just not as old as others. Emily Both states have history from before Americans made their way to them. Ponce de Leon tromped around Florida in search of the Fountain of Youth and that may explain St. Petersburg. ;-) Before that were the Mound Builders, who were there for many years, nobody knows for sure, but they left traces. California was inhabited before the missionaries built the chain of missions, and Russians came over and settled, as well. Lots of history, just not U.S. history necessarily. -- Joanne @ stitches @ singerlady.reno.nv.us http://bernardschopen.tripod.com/ Life is about the journey, not about the destination. |

Maybe if I lived in an older city I would feel differently. But the city where I live was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it town until the 1950s or 1960s, and I grew up in a town that had lots of historical buildings, and I miss it. |

That's an important point, Joanne.

I grew up in a small town in MS that was full of history, with many
historical buildings, too. That's probably why I became such a history buff. Emily |

Carl of the board books is a made up dog, so he could be any way the author wanted him to be. ;- But I do love those books. Thanks for reminding me of them--that would make a nice gift for the new grandbaby. especially since he has two canine big "brothers"! Karen Maslowski in Ohio Actually, Carl of the books is a real Rottweiler. The Carl books are written by Alexandra Day, and the Rottweiler is based on her dog, Carl. Madeline (the baby in her stories) is based on her granddaughter. The real Carl is also a therapy dog, trained to work with children. See www.gooddogcarl.com/ We have a Rottweiler, a white German Shepherd, a miniature Doxie, and a Maine Coone cat. The cat and the Rottweiler are the same age, and grew up together. The cat has a habit of attacking the dogs, then screaming for help :). He's been neutered, but that's never stopped him from roaming, although he seldom goes more than a few houses away. My SIL built him a "cat house" on the deck, so he has a cozy place to escape into, because if he wants out, nobody sleeps or escapes from his nagging until he gets his way. We have a set of small chimes hanging from the back door, and they ring it when they want out. He rings them like crazy until someone comes. He's an indoor cat on his terms. Sharon |

Sharon, this can't be the same dog. He's only six, and the books have
been out since my 20-yo was a baby! Sounds like more fiction to me. LOL It does make a good story, though.
