Can this felting be acheived by crocheting the bag? I have never done
felting before, but the effect is really neat. I think that you must use the special yarn to get the felted effect, am I right? Seaspray |

Seaspray Any 100% wool yarn will felt as long as it is stitched using a larger needle than normal. The felting process is basically caused by the agitation of the wool fibers. The yarn must have room to rub up against the stitches. For a yarn that normally calls for US 7 or 8 needles, I use a 10.5 or 11. You need to really adject for shrinkage, so make the item LARGER. I toss my finished item in a zippered pillowcase to keep the wool fuzzies out of my washer pipes. I throw in some detergent and jeans and/or towels to help with the aggitation. Then I run the hot cycle and stop it before the rinse cycle. I then wind it up to go through a second hot cycle, but I let it run all the way through. Once it has finished, ideally, you should not be able to clearly see the individual stitches, and the resulting fabric is thick and sometimes fuzzy. I dry my bag fitted on the outside of a similar size or shape (shoebox, bathroom trash can, etc.) and let it dry. Voila! One note about color, though. The lighter the color yarn, the less likely you will have good felting results. White, offwhite do not (I've been told) felt well. But, you can always try. |
