I wanted to show you the quilt block I'm using and went over to quilters
cache to see what its name was. There was really no need to be quite so
insulting but the name is Simple Star. Okay. It is about as simple as they
get but something mysterious or historical would have at least sounded
better.
Anyhow. I'm procrastinating because it is time Now to clear the rubble
from doing lots of Simple Stars. While there, I went to MamaBear's letter
for July 11th. Please go look. No matter how wild and crazy your sewing
room has become, this one will make you feel all neat and tidy. Somebody
please pass me the oxygen. http://www.quilterscache.com/Letters.html

ROFL! But you know, that mess isn't the worst -you can still see litle
areas of bare floor in her "before" photo! I do like a tidy work
space, though, and the "after" photos are MUCH improved.

IMO anything called simple is very often false advertising.

I use that star often. I think it should be favorite star rather than
simple
star.
There are some really messy sewing spaces. I suppose that is what helps
create a productive workplace for some but not so much for me. I have
spent a lot of time looking at sewing room pictures online. I am amazed
that people have such slapdash work spaces that they spend a lot of time
in. People will spend thousands of dollars on machines and fabrics and
sew on a $30 folding banquet table with stacks of junk surrounding them.
I have yet to see decent affordable sewing furniture. Much of it now is
cheap looking (not price though) weird laminate kind of stuff. Looks like
the little tykes kitchen the kids here had when they were 4 and 5. A
discussion last week with the guy that sells unfinished furniture here in
town
netted the info that there just isn't anything available to them. They
are the last hope for affordable real wood stuff I can find. I think I
will tidy
the sewing room after seeing those photos!

Thanks for the link!!! I have been trying to find someplace like this
for my new place. (or asking John....but shipping would be
horrendous!!!--LOL!) I vote that John has the best sewing stuff!

Well, as you say, people spend several thousand on a machine. My very
wonderful flat-bed table with air lift and loads of storage cost a lot
less than a machine. (German-made, Rauschenberg, NAYY) There's no
reason we should expect quality specialized sewing furniture at Ikea
prices, any more than we expect quality machines at Walmart prices. Of
course, geniuses like our John can build their own at far less cost
for materials, but they don't need to factor in the labor. At one
point, I did ask a local cabinet maker what he would charge to build
me a table, and it came to a lot more than the ready-made Rauschenberg
price even without the airlift!

Default sewing spaces & furniture Can't be that bad

Howdy!
I looked at the pics & had to scroll back to read the tags,
couldn't tell much difference between "before" & "after". g
Okay, so I tend to spread stuff, let it clutter, then clear it up
to start fresh. Works for me. Dirt doesn't work, trash doesn't work,
but a bit of "organized clutter" is my style. ;-D

Monday, younger son came over & helped clear out my Stuff Room, aka
The Green Room (dark green walls, great big window facing south).
We moved furniture, piles & baskets of stuff, he built metal shelves,
I stocked them, and there's a good path thru' that room, w/ everything
up off the floor except large baskets & cabinets. Wonderful. I don't
need more rooms, I can find things, & the extra furniture (cabinets)
went into my bedroom to be filled w/ Extras: books, baskets, notebooks,
keepsakes, gifts I don't know what to do with; more books on the custom-made
book shelves, quilts folded & stored nearby - what a sigh of relief for
the entire upstairs of the house!

There's a really good nekkid furniture store in Ft.Worth. I've
visited several times, got 3 of their pantry cabinets, painted them
a '30s era milky green (light green mixed w/ avocado green), some
dressers, a night stand... and I'm about ready to go for more.
http://www.nayfasfurniture.com/index.html
I put green glass knobs on all the cabinets; they are gorgeous,
pine, sturdy, deep shelves.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the dining room, my favorite place to sew on the
Janome, I'm working on a scrappy version of this Lincoln's Platform:
http://tinyurl.com/6xnrcpc
pattern he http://tinyurl.com/67m3lgu
I shopped The Stash & pulled lots of white-on-whites, rootled the
Baseball Squares & found lots of bigger pieces to play with; this is FUN!

Cheers!
Ragmop/Sandy- sizzling in north Texas... might as well quilt ;-D

And revenge is sweet. We have to be vigilant ( borderline violent) about
never dropping anything on the floor: no pins/needles, no scraps, no
dangling iron cords and no shipping packing, staples, paper clips or wire
twists. We have a Yorkie who thinks the whole world is big fun and
everything exists for his amusement. They've never complained but I'm
pretty sure my visiting quilting friends have thought my 'keep the floor
clean' mania was a bit of a pain.
Finally. One of them has a precious gorgeous baby Yorkie who thinks the
whole world is big fun and will try a taste of everything including
pins/needles, scraps . . . well. You know. Now she has a very clean
floor too. Life is good. Polly

My best friend is not a quilter but keeps a really clean house.
Always tidy and very clean. She got a puppy a year or so ago
I happily observed the floor had a more 'normal' look to it
than it used to. I feel good about that.
Ginger has a tendency to steal stuff (ginger the golden retriever
not our Ginger the quilter over on the coast)
She doesn't usually eat stuff though thankfully. The iron scares me a bit
with cats around though. I am still learning the trouble cats can
find. Keep those yorkies safe!

I have gone each year to this show [it's a real stretch given my
energy issues]

This year I have to go to Glendale for training for work on Sat 7/30.
There is a very outside chance I can get off from work on Fri 7/29,
but they won't let me know until a couple of days before - maybe even
the day before.

Wahhh! this is me sniffling because I won't get a chance for a meet-
up!

What classes are you taking, Sandy? Are you aware there is some pretty
cool stuff happening that weekend right there by the Convention Center
- pirate days for one!?
Ginger in CA

Wow! No, I didn't realize any cool stuff was happening! Thanks for the
heads-up, Ginger, and I'm really sorry you probably won't be able to be
there. I'm taking two classes from Charlotte Warr Andersen: One Line at
a Time Encore and Whirly Twirly Quilting Designs.
