Default Decorating eyeglasses cords?

Hello. I need some help with what I'm hoping will be a stocking
stuffer for my mom. She's always misplacing her eyeglasses, so i
thought I'd get her eyeglasses cords. When I went to buy them, I saw
many different kinds, but I also saw plain black ones. I thought if I
bought the plain black ones I could be really creative and unique and
decorate them myself. So now I'm sitting here with two different black
eyeglasses cords and no idea what will work.
I think they're cotton, but I also saw neoprene. I dismissed the
neoprene ones because I wasn't sure how they'd hold glue or ink, etc.
Any ideas or knowledge on how I can decorate these (besides stringing
beads)?

Why not beads? My favorite eyeglass cords (I have the same "problem" your
mother does!) are strung with wonderful, chunky, whimsical glass beads in
iridescent rainbow colors; I like it so much as jewelry/art that I never
lose the glasses they're attached to.

That said, fabric paints would probably work on the cotton one, as long as
it isn't cotton-covered elastic (the stretch would cause the paint to
crack, I'd imagine. I love Jacquard's Lumiere paints - they come in
gorgeous metallic colors and are permanent on fabric. Heck, they might even
work on the neoprene ...

Thank you so much for your response. I have nothing against beads; I
was just looking to do something different. You see a lot of beaded
glasses chains.

I don't think the cords I have are cotton-covered elastic, but they
are stretchy. That's one of the things that concerned me about using
paint. Not many other options, I guess.

Thank you again for your reply.
