Cool! So is this like that Kevin Bacon game? (6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon, or
something like that?)

I sure think so -- I've heard of so many doggies named Sophie.

Spike just showed up in the neighborhood. I live nextdoor to a dog hater
(everything hater, from what I know of her----thank goodness we hae 2 acres
of woods and hardly ever see them), and she called the police to come get
him because he was lying on her porch. (We are in a rural county with no
animal control or Humane Society. This means he'd have gone to the vet that
works with the city, for three days, and if he wasn't claimed, he'd have
been put down.) Spike had wandered over because he heard me throwing the
ball for the dogs, in the backyard. At the time, we had Jinx, Romeo, and
were fostering one for a rescue group in another county. My neighbor called
and told me she'd called the police. I let Spike into the backyard, and
when the police came, I said I'd be responsible for him. I figure the city
owes me the $50 I saved them---$25 for the boarding and $25 for the
euthanasia that the city gets charged everytime they take a dog up to the
vet.

Romeo actually belong to someone in town (We're kind of on the edge of
town.), but we didn't know it. He hung around here for about 6 months, and
we thought he was a stray. I drugged him and took him to the vet, for shots
and to see about neutering. The vet we went to was about 10 miles away, and
wouldn't you know that a girl, working there, lived nextdoor to the people
that owned him. He's kind of unusual looking, so she recognized him right
away. She called the people to see if they'd let me have him, and they said
no and even paid for his shots. I took him home, and they never came and
got him, and things went on for another several months. He was here all the
time.

The girl at the vet was so upset that she opened her mouth. She knew he'd
have a much better home with me. She said they were the kind of people who
got a pet, threw it out in the yard, and if it lived, it lived. They might
feed it now and then, but the pets were pretty much on their own. She said
at one time, they had him chained to a tree that came down (with him chained
to it) when it was struck by lightning. I'm sure he'd been run off by all
the neighbors, when scrounging for food. Even now, we've made a lot of
progress, but he's still skittish, although very gentle and has never even
threatened to bite someone.

Finally, the girl at the vet told me that her neighbors said I could have
Romeo. We've had him for 9 years now and Spike for 3.

Sorry, probably more than you wanted to know!

Both of them were street puppies. I
usually say, "pound hounds", but my DD doesn't like this since they didn't
actually come from the pound.

Tell again where they came from? I forgot.

Spike is on my top ten list of Fabulous Dogs Of All Time. #1 is my dear
departed lab, Cador and #2 is my dad's dog, Ellis-the-mayor.

I just love Spike's antics. The beads are a fitting and cute tribute!
