Default US equivalent

One of the projects in Beaded Dimensional Embroidery by Helan Pearce that I
bought at EGA national seminar is saying "do me soon!" All the threads, beads
and sequins are stitched directly on thick vilene background.

Is pellon similar? If not, what readily available non-woven interfacing could
be used as the backing?
