is it OK to show a top in your guild's show and tell or do you guys
limit yourselves to completed quilts? I am not too shy, but I haven't
gathered the courage to do SNT yet... maybe now that I was voted evening
secretary (though of course they misspronounced my last name!) I will
finally dare - but should I wait until I have really finished a project
or do you guys think I can show a top?

I show people tops all the time! (Not a member of a "proper" guild, just
belong to 2 informal groups.) It's especially useful if you want to ask for
advice. Makes a good escuse too.

It probably depends on your guild. The expectation in mine is that
you will only show finished quilts at show and tell. The exception is
if it is almost done and will be gone (to a gift recipient) before the
next guild meeting.

My guild is pretty much the same as Mary's -- finished quilts only
unless they'll be gone to a recipient before the next meeting. Most of
the unfinished ones we see are only missing a completed binding. We have
a large guild and show and tell would last forever if very many people
showed unfinished tops.

Oh heck, Marissa, of course it is okay!!
Sometimes people show a top and announce
they want some ideas for quilting
pattern. Sometimes they show the top
because as soon as they quilt it, they
will send it far away. It is okay.

We have everything shown..

Wearables (often worn that night by the maker)
Tote bags, pin cushions and other little things
Tops
Partially quilted quilts
Quilted but not bound quilts
(often these three fall into the category of "I'm sending this to my new
grandchild and it will be gone by the next meeting")
Finished quilts
Quilts from thrift stores/rummage sales/auctions (look at what I found!)
Featherweights (I saw this while on a walk through my neighborhood
sitting by a trash can, etc)

Show a top!

We had a woman show an IRON that she got cheap on Ebay! I thought that was
odd, but now I see lots of members carrying this little iron to workshops.

Yes, that's exactly how it is in my guild too. And Marisa, don't feel bad.
My last name is Pucci. Even in this town of Italians, mine gets
mispronounced all the time. You can imagine. I'm gonna be Treasurer next
year! No more newsletter, yahoo!

I don't have to imagine. I read it with the wrong pronunciations the
first time, then re-read it with a different, possibly correct,
pronunciations after reading the word "Italians". It's possible that
both possible ways I've thought about are wrong though.

I would think each guild has different ways they handle show and tell.
There are mostly finished quilts and stuff at our meetings but once
in awhile there is a top. I took in one top to S&T that had taken me
years to finish and I knew was going to take years to quilt (it did).
It was well received both times. Mine is a smaller group so that makes
things different than a guild with hundreds of folks. We are around 80
and maybe 30-40 that show up most meetings. I always enjoy seeing what
other quilters are doing. BTW, Some of the old gals still call me tiara
instead of Taria, it has been over 10 years since I joined my guild.
