Great room, great stuff!
Now, here's my question - when we go on stash raids we aren't limited to just fabric are we? can we go for stuff that holds fabric? has fabric touch it? is within, say, fifty feet of some fabric? just wondering... vbg -- Laura Bartl http://mywebpages.comcast.net/laurabartl/index.htm "WoodenSpools" wrote in message ... My stash is first sorted by type. I am a Civil War reproduction fabric fanatic and have the first three drawers of my oak dresser full of that - arranged by color. Then a drawer for homespun plaids; all colors. Then drawers and bins sorted by color for most the rest of it. Christmas fabric gets its own bin. And then there's a bin for the stuff I don't use but haven't managed to part with yet. Hubby recently helped me build one of those Judy Martin ironing tables, and I have bins of fabric on the shelves underneath the ironing surface. And then I have a wood CD cabinet hanging on the wall housing my fat quarter collection; all colors. Sorted by color, mainly. I have three of those wonderful three-shelf
storage units from Wal-Mart with pieces one yard or less, sorted by color. A large 4-door cabinet with bigger chunks of fabric, mostly sorted by color. And two 4-drawer plastic bins hold my 6-inch charms, which are also sorted by color. Also a dresser which holds solids and some poly-cotton yardage that a friend gave me a couple of years ago. I refuse to show pictures of my sewing room, as it is usually in chaos! -- Carolyn in The Old Pueblo If it ain't broke, you aren't trying. --Red Green If it ain't broke, it ain't mine. Carolyn McCarty "frood" wrote in message ... Instead of being hidden in another thread, let's pull this topic out and see what happens! How do you sort your stash? By color? By style? By size? By date acquired? I sort by color and size. Sort of. The majority of my stash is pieces less than a yard big, mainly FQs. Those are sorted color into plastic bins. I have 4 large bins, and the rest are slightly bigger than shoebox size (but can hold a lot!). The large bins are about the same as 2 small bins, maybe a little more. Pink and red share a large bin; green and blue; yellow and orange; and purple shares with those multi-color ones that don't fit anywhere else. Blacks, browns, creams, whites are spread higgledy piggledy in 2 bins, mixed in with some African fabrics. I should re-sort these, but that's pretty low on my priority list right now! However, outside of this basic color sorting are special categories. Civil War repros are in their own bin, as are Asian fabrics, Christmas, Halloween and a bunch of "celestial" ones. The larger than 1 yard pieces are not sorted, but are in a seperate cupboard. When I need a big piece, I just go rootle through. -- Wendy http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/quilt1.htm De-Fang email address to reply |

I will be delighted to come sort your stash for you. You will just be so
amazed at how meager your stash will appear when I am finished. Hee, hee, he. Polly "Laura Bartl" wrote in message ... Hmm, I guess I'm weird, but I already knew that. I have one area with randoms, stuff I pick up because I like it. That stuff is labelled with the amount. I have another drawer with Christmas fabrics only. And a third drawer with kit stuff. Those are the main areas, then there is stuff stashed all over in other drawers. I will need Polly's help one of these days when I'm actually looking for something I can't find. (Right now all I can't find is time to quilt!!!) |

What a great sewing room Bev has! I also sort by color. Have child's wooden
toy storage unit (from COSTCO) with all the colored plastic tubs holding FQs separated by color - larger tubs holding fabric purchased with project in mind w/pattern from EQ5 - then a large baker's rack with 1-3 yards on shelves and projects in progress. :-) Mary in S.A. |

I have a closet with 3 rows of wire shelves all the way across. I have 2
large piles of novelty fabrics and multi-colored fabrics, a pile of white/cream/brown neutrals and a pile of gray/black neutrals. The rest of my stash is sorted by the colors in the color wheel - blue, blue/violet, violet, red/violet, red, orange/red, orange, yellow/orange, yellow, yellow/green, green, and blue/green. I did this sorting as an assignment for my color class and have found it to be very very helpful when selecting fabric for a project. Having everything where I can see it all is wonderful and having it sorted helps me to determine where I have "holes" in my stash. For example, I've been buying a bit more yellow, orange, yellow/orange, and orange/red because I'm way short in that area. I know I will always have more blue than everything else (it's what I use!), but the other colors are really useful at times and the fabric stores are not open 24/7. I have also been looking for pure hues - I have discovered that most of my stash is muted and grayed. Pure hues are more difficult to find - so I pick them up where I find them. -- Teresa in Colorado The Presser Foot Sewing Machine Sales, Service, Supplies, and More www.thepresserfoot.com -- "Carolyn McCarty" wrote in message ... When I first start acquiring a stash I sorted by color. That was pretty
easy when everything I owned fit in one dresser drawer with room left over for tools, patterns and a book or two. Now I sort by category or project (or MEQ). The plaids all live with each other....sometimes a stripe wanders in for a while until it finds its very own bin. I also have separate bins for batiks, for backgounds (beige, cream, WOW etc.), for Orientals, for novelties, and for African fabrics. The fabrics that don't fit into a special category are sorted not just by color but whether the color is warm or cool. Really large pieces that I bought to use for backings are in their own drawer. Those heavy plastic bags that blankets come in are really handy for holding all of a project too. Dee in LeRoy, NY "frood" wrote in message ...
