I bet you have stars in your eyes. I would be floating on air with stars.
I would love to have an opportunity like that with a master cabinet maker,
another painter, jeweler, and I could go on.

This is so, so wonderful. And I know he'll love the print case. All those
perfect drawers for heavy stones and tools. Do you still have one those
left for yourself?

This goes along with my observation that even in small towns and remote
places there are great resources, once you get into the system/society to
find them.

I'm feeling your excitement about this from here! Man! I love seeing people
get excited about stuff they love. Warms my heart.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from vj :

]sorry - i left out a word in my excitement - he wants the DRAWER i
]refinished to hang on the wall - not the whole cabinet.

Tina:

i took the drawer over to him yesterday afternoon. [after double
checking with Mom that she has another one for me] he was like a
little kid with a new toy. evidently he took a typesetting class "way
back when" and has wanted one of those drawers ever since. it's one
my dad gave me about 25 years ago and i spent several weeks one summer
completely disassembling it, refinishing it, and then putting it back
together. you wouldn't believe how those things are constructed -
they're like jigsaw puzzles! he said if i could do that good a job on
that project, he sees no problem with me learning the things i want to
do.

AND he reads science fiction and used to race Porsches! his wife was
head of his pit crew!

That makes it even better. He has chosen you as a student/apprentice
because of the care and skill you have shown in other work.

Was this guy into Formula One racing? If so, when? He might know Walter
(of the engine).

you know, i'm not sure. he's got trophies and pictures all over the
house and workshop, but i couldn't tell from the pictures. i took him
all of my "Born to Run" books because they combine elves and racing,
and he has a Porsche he's working on in the garage. i THINK it's all
'track' racing rather than Formula One, but i'll ask him when i see
him again. Formula One is the only kind i've ever actually been
interested in. i do know it was a LONG time ago. he has to be in his
late 70s at least. but he seems to keep up on a lot of it.

he said that Porsche wanted to hire him long-term as a driver but he
and his wife decided that their marriage was more important.
