Default Carving Mallet

Can anyone point me in the direction of a plan for a carving mallet - either carved or turned?
Thanks
Greg

What you see for sale is a good design. I like turning my own, because then I can make a variety of handle sizes and lengths for comfort and control. The size of the head determines weight of the blow when handle lengths are equal. Remember to taper ~ 5 degrees from end toward handle for controllability - outside of arc arrives at about the same time as inside - and make them from woods with little difference in hardness between spring and summer wood for control of separation.

I like mine from hard maple or hop-hornbeam, soaked a few months in a 50-50 solution of PEG 1000 to keep the outside soft, "deadening" the blow for the sake of my elbow.

Thanks for the information, particularly about keeping the outside soft to deaden the blow.
