Default Summer of Socks 2008

I don't recall seeing anyone post about this but forgive me if I just don't
remember. If anyone is interested in doing a sock knit-along with, oh, like
1000 other people this summer, then you might want to check out
http://zarzuelaknitsandcrochets.com/blog/?p=394. You do not have to have a
blog but if you don't have one you need either a Ravelry or a flickr account
to post pictures (I'll be using Ravelry since I am still, sadly, blogless).
The sign-ups close tomorrow.

I haven't done this (or any other online knit-along) but it seemed like a
fun way to find out about other sock patterns and yarns. I've started
collecting since I noticed my sock yarn stash was down to 2 pairs-worth. I
bought 2 skeins from Ravelry's FSOT board already and just got a birthday
gift certificate to my favorite LYS so will be picking up a couple more
skeins in the very near future.

Is anyone else doing this?

A little afraid of what I've gotten myself into,
LauraJ

I'll probably participate in an unofficial capacity. I have no blog, am
not on Ravelry, and am too inept to figure out how to use our digital
camera anyway. I've been on a bit of a sock binge anyway, and I'm
currently participating in Sock Wars III - still waiting for
confirmation of my first kill g - so I think I can knit nothing but
socks for the summer.

Oooh, I'll have to check that out come October! I've heard of it but have
never participated and don't know much about it.

How did you like the Sock Wars pattern? A couple people in SoS have said
they are currently doing Sock Wars and didn't enjoy the pattern and are
hoping to be killed off soon. But then someone else said she did like it.
I think Sock Wars sounds like a great concept but I know I couldn't take the
stress!

I am totally amazed that the person who "won" SoS last year knit 42 PAIRS of
socks in 3 months. I think my shoulders would fall off! I didn't join for
the competition but for the enjoyment of sharing patterns and meeting
like-minded knitters. The # of sock patterns in my queue has multiplied
severalfold since I started chatting with them all.

It's a bit strange to me. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had made my
first pair with a color that was more "stripey" - I used Tofutsies color
733 (listed on SWTC's website as "Foot in the Grave - the official yarn
of Sock Wars III) which doesn't have as sharp a contrast as some of the
other colors. Also, the finished socks look a bit on the loose-fitting
side, even if they are knit to the gauge given on the ball band (8 sts
per inch on 2.75-mm needles). I'm gonna try the pattern with a
different color and on my usual 2-mm needles to see if I like it better;
at least the socks will fit me the way I like. I'll probably use my
"socks of doom" as relaxing-at-night socks, like I'm still doing with
the pair I got in SW I.

As for stress, it's all in fun. Some folks were killed in one day, but
most folks don't put their lives on hold for this. With me, I didn't
have any work to do last Friday so I could spend a few hours in the
afternoon knitting, in addition to my usual couple hours knitting at
night. As it is, I finished the pair Monday morning and got it in the
mail that afternoon.

42 pairs!!! Dang, that person must have no life other than knitting.
That's like a sock a day. I figure I can crank out a pair a week
without disrupting the rest of my life. I've cranked out 4 pair in the
last 4 weeks, and just started another one a couple days ago. If I'm
gonna knit nothing but socks all summer, though, I better get cracking
on finishing up the summer top I've currently got on needles, as well as
sewing together a lace cardigan, and I need to relocate the pattern for
the other jacket I have on hold; this one's all done except for the
collar.

I also discovered that my stash of sock yarns - oh, excuse me, sock
yarns don't count as stash - is getting a bit low so I ordered myself
enough to make 3 pair g

I've already signed up for a stash reduction exercise. Every two
weeks, we
are given a pattern which will use not very much yarn, and it has to
be from
stash. But I'll have a look at this one anyhow, even though I don't
have the
time to do it. Thanks.

Where is this stash-reduction exercise? Sounds like something I may enjoy,
especially if it uses small amounts of yarn. I find that these days my
stash of new yarn is under control but the leftovers are driving me crazy!

Thanks!

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, Laura. It is at a Delphi Forum -
Knit&Chat.
Sorry I don't have the URL, but a Google should bring it up.
What I like is that you can do as many or as few as you want.
Perfect, just in case you get extra busy.

Higs,
Katherine
