Here's a link that was posted on another list that seems to apply
exactly to the "Dear Jane" copyright question, from a real copyright
attorney who also quilts:

Thanks Kathy. That author has put it clearly and simply.

Just a note, and I'm not trying to start something here, but her last
paragraph seems to uphold the doctrine of "Its better to ask forgiveness
than to ask permission." In this litigious age of ours, sometimes that
is the better part of valor.

Depends on how you look at it. I ask first, because I really want to
know if the person is going to be a pain *before* I get started.
