Default online appraisals ?

Dear Friends,

I have some vintage and antique pieces of jewelry, and I would like to have
them appraised. I read that online appraisal services now exist. I do have
quality digital photographs of the items. Please give me your input on this
subject. Thank you very much.

Even with the best photos, the service could, at best,
give the appraisal only conditionally, because they can't
run tests on the piece.

"If the stones are what it is supposed to be, and
if the metal is what it is supposed to be, and
if the provenance is what it is supposed to be, and
if .......
then ..."

This still might be helpful with certain pieces.
I don't know of any web service that I personally would trust to
do this.

For these reason, the items must be physically send or brought to my workshop.
Than I (e.g.)start the appraisal he http://www.schmuck-boerse.com

Bad idea. No good appraisals are possible from photos only.

Just because people offer services doesn't mean they're good services.
You need the jewelry in your hand to properly appraise it.

The only appraisal that you will be able to accurately obtain from a
photo, is whether the appraiser likes the photo....or not.

Although I tend to agree with the responses so far, I wouldn't rule out the
use of photos to estimate approximate values for objects, including jewelry.
The photos in catalogs, online shops, ebay, insurance documents, etc. do a
fair job in giving one at least a ball park value. Of course there are many
assumptions that might not hold up in court. Will E.
