Default Log Cabin - first block ever

Hi ladies,

I'm a completely self taught quilter, and still a very novice one at that.
I always liked the look of a log cabin quilt so today made my very first
block out of scraps. Was very pleased with the ease of making it - it looks
so much more complex than it actually is!

Went through my stash and sorted out lots of odds and ends of blue fabric,
in preparation for making a blue log cabin quilt for my bed. So excited!!

I can't make log cabin blocks that are the same size! I'm just not accurate
when I make that block unless I paper piece it or cut out each log the
correct size.

Morag, you picked a GREAT block for beginners! Log cabin blocks go
together so fast, are very forgiving, and a good way to use scraps, too.
I recently finished a scrappy log cabin lap quilt top, it will be my
sister's Christmas gift.

Welcome to this crazy addiction!!

Congratulations, Morag!
Make sure you check out the very many different settings of log cabin
before you make yours up. I find it a fascinating block - mostly
because of all the wonderful things that can be done with just the basic
one. There is a chap called George (sorry I can't recall his surname)
who makes beautiful quilts, but always with a log cabin or variation
thereof. He has posted on RCTQ - I think there might have been a
reference this year? Can anyone remember his name?
Good for you for just getting on and doing it.

Welcome Morag! The Log Cabin block was the second one I attempted --
someone way back when here suggested I put together a simple 9 patch as
a first block maker so that was done first, I personally prefer the log
cabin myself =) It looks less like a beginner block in my opinion but
is still easy to do.

KJ -- I can't seem to either -- I finally just "settled" for using my
6x6 square ruler to square them up after piecing enough to be at lest
that size.

Welcome Morag - have I seen your name around elsewhere?

and Tricia

If you are gonna "square up" it might help to make the last row of logs a
fraction bigger to allow for the trimming so your logs will be a consistent
size (more or less). Or maybe try the chain piecing method for making half
log cabin blocks?

Otherwise - are you "into" hand sewing? If so - try Manx quilting. It's
the original form of Log cabin, done by hand on a foundation, and
surprisingly quick (no ironing, and very little measuring). I have left the
instructions up on my webshots.

If you hadn't guessed - I LOVE log cabin!

Hand sewing is alright -- I have clothing items that I did completely
by hand before I had my sewing machine -- but that type of sewing is
different stitch wise than what I have heard for piecing quilt blocks
-- I hand stitch clothes almost completely with a backstitch and
doubled thread. I'll check it out though on your web site.

Yes I like Log Cabin too - you can make the finished quilt look so
different depending on how you orientate the blocks. Really clever.

The sorting is as exciting as the sewing!

Sawing each log the absolutely correct width and length before stitching
makes putting the blocks together so much easier.
My first log, I just happily stitched around with long strips and cut
when I got to the end of the adjoined piece. That works but since some
fabric strips will stretch, it makes getting the blocks to go together
without a fight a pain in the neck.
Another thing to consider - some log cabin lovers insist that the
beginning base square just has to be red. It's worth considering and does
make a difference. I like that look but, as you know, could change my mind
in mid-sentence. Do think about it. Polly
