Test Posts, general info about rec.crafts.jewelry
To Mr. Toller, (fake Yahoo email address and all)
and others who may wish to try testing their posting software by sending test posts to this group. Please be aware that "test posts" are considered off topic in all usenet groups other than those groups specifically set up for testing purposes. As such, test posts are never approved and posted to this group. In your case, all four of them were correctly received at the moderator's email address, and died there shortly thereafter for the above reason. Some clarifications and reminders to any newcomers to this group: rec.crafts.jewelry is a discussion forum intended for discussion of the topic of the craft of jewelry making, as well as related topics, such as lapidary work (gem cutting), gemology, or the various aspects, both hobby and business related, of being in the business of making jewelry, which may include discussions about marketing and selling. However it's a non-commercial group, which means actual advertising and selling of jewelry is not permitted in this group. See below for more on advertising. The group is moderated, which means, among other things, a time delay between when you send a post and when it will appear in the group, varying from a few minutes to as much as 24 hours. Most days, new postings are processed several times a day. The moderator (me) is a volunteer, rather than online full time, so be a little patient, please. Feel free to contact me via direct email with any questions you may have about the group or posting problems, etc. A few posters, generally out of the U.S.A. have some trouble posting normally. If this is a problem for you, contact me for other options. Readers reading or posting to the group from the Google web based news interface should be aware that this group part of the usenet internet news structure, not a group exclusive to the Google web site. The group can be accessed on Google, for those with difficulty getting it on their own ISP's news server, and the Google web site offers long term archival storage of postings, where you can research past postings to the group going back many years. Be aware, however, that past postings found on Google may indeed by quite old (years) without appearing obviously different to a casual reader than a current posting. Before replying to a post found on Googles site, please check the date of that posting, and ask yourself whether it can be still considered part of a currently active discussion, or whether your reply post will still be relavent or make sense to readers. Remember that on news servers other than Google, postings are available for only a limited time, varying from a few weeks to a few months. Replies to a year old posting may be confusing to readers, and may not get much of a response. All posts must be in plain ascii text (plain typed text) rather than HTML formatted text or "Rich text", or the like. While this is technially still the official standard of usenet, it's often ignored by microsoft software (such as outlook express) and AOL news readers. In these, you may have to change posting settings to send messages in plain text if it is not the default setting. Postings through the Google web interface to the group are automatically sent in plain ascii, so those are fine. Binary attachments (or posts, such as the aformentioned HTML formatted posts) are not allowed. That means no images or other attachments. If you wish to include images in a posting, instead put the image up on the web, and post just the URL to it in the newsgroup message. Your ISP no doubt gives you some free web space in which you can do this, or there are web sites that will do it, often for free. No commercial advertising is generally allowed. No selling of jewelry or promoting of jewelry sales web sites. Exceptions are made for items of particular interest to jewelry craftspeople, such as used tools and equipment, used books, unusual or hard to find materials, announcements of unusual closeouts, or the like. Ads much offer such items for direct sale through the ad. No online auction sites (or the group would be swamped with ebay ads). Those ads which are allowed must begin their subject header with the tag: [ADVERT]. No more than one ad per month per advertiser. If you're unsure, contact me first, please. Thank you all for your participation and enjoyment of this newsgroup. Peter Rowe moderator rec.crafts.jewelry |
