opinions needed
I know this is the right place to come for opinions! G I showed you my
Hunter's Star quilt top yesterday (in case your memory needs refreshing, it's at http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1/wips.html), and now I need input. I'm ready to begin quilting this one -- in fact, I've already begun doing the stabilizing lines in the ditch between the blocks. That's in monofilament thread so as to be inconspicuous, of course. My question is about the quilting I'm going to do in the rest of the quilt. I'm going to use a swirly sort of pattern to give the quilt some movement; the stars themselves will probably be minimally quilted, if at all. The swirly stuff will be over the blue/purple sections (all but the stars, including the border). What color should I use???? I'd like the quilting to be sort of subtle, since there's already so much going on in the fabrics. If I use a dark shade (a dark blue or purply shade), I'm afraid it will show too much in the lighter sections. And if I use a lighter shade, I'm afraid it will be overwhelming in the darker sections. Any ideas? Opinions? Thanks! -- Sandy in Henderson, near Las Vegas my ISP is earthlink.net -- put sfoster1(at) in front http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1 AKA Dame Sandy, Minister of Education |

Try several shades of grey. I find that I can usually find one that
blends quite well. marcella In article , Sandy Foster wrote: I know this is the right place to come for opinions! Sandy: Yes, Marcella's suggestion is real good. I'd go with a variegated gray ... a rayon with a nice sheen. Do you want my snail address now, or when you finish this one? As the 'blues' are so varied, I would use a variegated blue.
I have just been looking at my Sulky variegated green; and, if they did one in blue, I think that would be wonderful. It does shimmer. Aurifil variegateds are lovely too. I have a greenish blue one of theirs. As they are fine (Sulky is, too), they wouldn't be too obtrusive, even when a light bit of thread hit a dark bit of fabric. YLI variegateds do not have that lovely sheen (though I use them quite a lot) - on a wallhanging you wouldn't need their strength. .. Sandy -
Gorgeous quilt!! Another option is to choose a *medium* blue...that way it brings the darker and lighter blues closer "together" with the busy-ness, it will be "noticed" - because it is quilting, but will also tend to disappear. A multi-hued thread will add to the busy-ness and might not give you what you want. (I only know because BTDT). 2¢ from New York Sue D. I'd originally considered that idea, but discarded it almost as quickly. Unfortunately, I don't think one will work on this quilt. I have a couple in blues, and I piled some of those threads on the quilt and was disappointed in the results. -- Sandy in Henderson, near Las Vegas my ISP is earthlink.net -- put sfoster1(at) in front http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1 AKA Dame Sandy, Minister of Education |

Ah!
I'll be really interested to hear what you do find. I always have this dilemma myself! The more sides of a discussion I hear, to learn, the better g ..
