Glad you found the pattern you were looking for. I've only made the ones with
the hole.

Perhaps concentrating on making the "peak" stitches a bit tighter, so the
3dc can't make a big hole. Or skip the ch at the peak entirely, see how
that works in a sample.

Have you worked a sample of this stitch? I noticed that row 1 has "3 dc
in ch" and that all the other increases are worked like this as well. I
always end up with some sort of hole when I do this.

The chain was only on row one, which was worked over a foundation chain.
There's no way to omit that chain. The other rows were worked over the
center dc of the increase below.
