manilla rope
Heres one still being published The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor, or a
Key to the Leading of Rigging and to Practical Seamanship - Darcy Lever I believe it was first published in 1819, I'd like to get a copy myself I've never looked at it. On the topic of manila rope I doubt you will find any 4 strand. I think you could probably make some by rigging up a 4 strand rope twister (it's not as hard as you might think) you can buy some manila smaller than a 1/4 inch that should twist up well, I had some samples from the Frank Winne Company out in Oregon their samples looked very good. I've twisted up some very good 1/4 inch hemp rope from hemp cords if you have two people it is actually quite easy to do, you will get some strange looks from the neighbors though. Marty www.knotstuff.com "HAWKNFROG" wrote in message ... along with my knots my other hobby is reenacting. my problem in bringing the two together is research, I have yet to get my hands on a copy of any early books dealing with 18th century knot work, and I have as yet been unable to find a supplier for 4 strand manilla rope. Can anyone help with either of these? Bill Molenda |
