Default Reverse single crochet?

Good evening/morning.

I have a question about a reverse (American) single crochet.

I have two books that describe a reverse sc, but they are completely
different in their directions. One says, working right to left, insert hook
from back to front and work sc. The other says, working left to right,
insert hook front to back as usual and work sc. I believe this second
method is called a shrimp stitch or a pie crust. But my question is which
is the proper method of doing a reverse sc?

Thanks : )
Christy

Christy i just sit here with Liz Pauldan`s CROCHET History and
Techniques on my lap
in page 299 she describes SHRIMP Stitch Edging [shrimp picot]
To word sc from left to righr on the face of the crochet work : 1 sc
in the edge, *insert the hook into both sides of the st to the right
of the just worked st , guide the yarn in under the hook and draw the
yarn through making 2 loops on the hook, YO, draw the yarn throught
the 2 loops * rep from * to * , Sts made in this way will turn
slightly around one another to form a knot like edge.

Mirjam,

Leisure Arts Quick and Cozy Afghans (page 121) describes a reverse
single crochet as the same thing as the shrimp stitch. However, The Book of
Crochet From Beginner to Expert: The Best Crochet Book for You (page 31)
describes a reverse sc "The hook is inserted from the back of the work under
both loops of each stitch in the previous row, rather than from front to
back." The st are still made right to left and not left to right as above.

My question is which is the proper way to do a reverse single crochet?

Thanks,
Christy

Found another description !!!!

In Module Magic By Ginger Luters , Xrx books, 2004, on pge 119 , You
have
Backwards Single Crochet
1, Work from Left to right ,
1a Work as a slip st to begin.
1b Insert hook into next st to right.
2 Bring yarn through st only , as soom as hook clears the st flip your
wrist [and the hook] . There are now 2 loops on the hook , and the
just- made loop is to the front of the hook [left of old loop]
3 Yarn over and through both loops om hook , onr backwards single
crochet completed.
4 continue working to the right , reapeating from step 1b. Book has a
drawing ,

The way I was taught how to do reverse sc I was taught is also called
"crab stitch". You work from left to right, inserting the hook from
front to back like you would a regular sc, yo, and draw through both
loops on the hook; it's the exact way you do a regular sc, only you go
the opposite direction.

Thank you Mirjam,

So the shrimp stitch is the proper way to do it. : ) I appreciate the help.
I have leg warmers on hooks waiting for the finishing touch, which happened
to be reverse sc. Now I can finish them. : )

I think we all get confused when a st has more than one name or has an
unusual way of making it
