1. make my own charms (flat).
The book "All Wired Up" (here's the URL to Amazon or you can search
book title in Amazon)

shows an example.

I **don't** want to make the wire scrolling but be able to create my
own funky letter charms similar to the fonts used on the cover of the
book [or even find a place that sells some funky ones]

Do I need to be a metalsmith to do this?

No, you don't need to be a silversmith to make charms like those. You
only need to learn how to wrap and form wire.

2. 'wire name jewelry writing' as it's referred to on a 6 DVD How To
set on Ebay. To see what I'm talking about, you can go to Ebay and
search for item 110137908493. Unfortunately. that's way out of my
price range - I don't do gold anyway, just silver, but I'd like to be
able to personalize pendants. Anyone know of another option besides
spending the $125? Is this difficult or easy? I'm pretty patient...

Thanks.

I am not a wire wrapper, but it doesn't look as difficult as say...
casting a silver pendant or making a knife. You just need some
instruction and experience. Instead of spending a butt load of money
on instructional videos and books, why not see if you can review this
stuff for free. I suggest that you go to your local library and look
at the reference material they have on file. I found lots of books
about silver, jewelry, etc in my library. Maybe your local library is
on line, and if so, you could see what they offer in reference material
before you make the trip. I believe there are all kinds of websites
on the net that deal with this type of jewelry and how to make it ...
start researching and reading, then gather your materials and get to
work. You wont know if you can do it without trying.
