So why bother? Give them something cheap from the discount store and
either wear the scarves yourself or give them to someone who WILL
appreciate them

Just to add to Olwyn Mary's comment: if it turns out they like the items
from the store and at least give a thank-you, then you can stop trying to
create something yourself that they will appreciate. If they don't value
beautifully hand-knit items and prefer mass-produced gifts, then that's what
you should give them(if you feel like giving them anything at all, of
course).

items 'value'... however, they're both (mother more than sis!)
