Try a needle with a larger hole, such as a denim or topstitching needle.

The sewing machine foot that you're using should have a shallow 'groove' on the
bottom, which allows the satin stitching to pass thru without bunching.

Change the top spool from vertical to horizontal (or vice versa).

And look towad the end of the book on Fabric Bowls. She shows an option with
squares fused and folded over the rim, rather than the satin stitching. Looks
great; much easier; uses a lot less thread and time! (Spoken as a veteran of
several dozen bowls.)
