This is a good book, but as David noted it takes "some serious study".
I have a chemistry background and found it pretty heavy going. I
certainly wouldn't start with it. FYI, it's been reprinted...

ferric chloride
Radio Shack used to sell it as "PCB" or "PC Board" etching solution.
Perhaps the person you talked with didn't recognize it by the name
ferric chloride. You can find ferric chloride etching solution...
